3 Why Norup for middle school? We want your child/children to attend Norup if you are looking for a unique school with high expectations. We believe we have a lot to offer and we continue to expand our offerings. We are moving in a very positive direction. State top-to-bottom ranking: 2012: 46 th percentile 2013: 62 nd percentile 2014: 75 th percentile 2015 – no ranking due to M-Step, but double digit %’s above state averages (some doubled)

4 Norup is unique K-8 – 797 students. MYP (middle years programme) projections for 2016-17: 6 th grade => 128 7 th grade => 175 8 th grade => 150 International Baccalaureate approach and Common Core are very closely aligned

5 Schedule Norup will run 7 class periods of 51 minutes from 8:15 AM – 3:30 PM. 5 th /6 th grade lunch will run from 11-11:50 AM. All students, per IB requirements, must take 6 of the following per year: Math Science World Language ELA Humanities Technology Fine Arts P.E. Performing Arts

7 ELA programming 6 th graders are placed in two periods of ELA back-to-back with the same teacher Emphasis on Reading and Writing in critical year 7 th and 8 th graders currently are in one period of ELA Writing – Lucy Calkins/Writer’s Workshop Reading – Reader’s Workshop/Group Novels/AR Extra Reading Support and Writing Support classes available in 7 th grade

8 Math Programming CMP-3 is our main resource. It is geared toward Common Core Standards. 6 th grade – Math 6, 6+ or Math 7,7+ 7 th grade – Math 7,7+ or Math 8,8+ 8 th grade – Math 8,8+ or Geometry First track is grade level with “Algebra” in 8 th grade being the goal. Second track is advanced.

9 Math (continued) Support classes for Math 6, 7, and 8 are available. These are taken in place of a world language, PE rotation, or elective. Math 6+, 7+, and 8+ are extra 10 week courses to get all units in for math. CMP-3 has 8 large investigative units per year which takes longer than 1 period per day. Geometry students don’t need 8+ and will get a different experience in that final 10 weeks

10 Humanities (Social Studies) 6 th grade: World Geography and Current Events 7 th grade: Europe, Africa, Asia – geography, sociology, anthropology 8 th grade: US History Colonization – pre Civil War. 8 th grade culminating IB service project is done in this class as well.

11 Science 6 th grade – Life Science 6 => Basic chemistry and biology 7 th grade – Earth Science 7 => Physical and Earth sciences 8 th grade – Science 8 => Basic physics

12 World Languages Spanish, French, and Chinese currently offered to 7 th /8 th grade Spanish and French can be taken for middle school exposure or for high school credit. Chinese is currently for high school credit only.

13 Gym/Tech/Health/Math + Physical Education is offered for 20 weeks (1/2 year) The other half of the year for 6 th grade is 10 weeks of technology and 10 weeks of Math 6+ The other half of the year for 7 th grade is 10 weeks of tech and 10 weeks of Math 7+. The other half of the year for 8 th grade is 10 weeks of tech and 10 weeks of Math 8+.

14 Elective opportunities Orchestra – Grade Level Art – 6 th grade, 7 th /8 th grade, Advanced 8th Band – Grade Level Choir – Mixed Intermediate, Advanced Boys, Advanced Girls => May be 6 th /7 th /8 th next year Robotics – 7 th /8 th grade – replaces elective or gym/tech combination Advanced math up through Geometry on site, bussing from Berkley High School for higher level courses when needed

15 IEP/504 students Two resource room teachers for ELA/Math LRC’s for both IEP and 504 students All 7 th /8 th grade resource room ELA students also take grade level ELA Limited paraeducator push in support Teachers are experienced in implementing 504 accommodations

21 Not everything is perfect for everyone in middle school Social issues with peers may occur Some students struggle academically for the first time Some struggle with 7 classes and transitions every 51 minutes. Some struggle with being challenged Some struggle with workload All of us need to coach students through the middle school years.

22 Minor things that are not so minor Students share lockers and maintain that locker for their three years here. Singles are available but are not close to most classes. Lunch/recess is 50 minutes per day (25 in cafeteria, 25 outside or in gym) 6 th graders line up at front door and doors will open at 8:00. Rules/expectations are done in detail that first week.
