There is a pattern and there are themes!

Genesis is divided into ten main sections, each beginning with the word “account”

Genesis 2:4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. Genesis 2:4 Genesis 5:1 This is the written account of Adam’s family line. When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. 8 There is a pattern and there are themes! Genesis is divided into ten main sections, each beginning with the word “account” Others are 25:12; 25:19; 36:1 repeated for emphasis at 36:9—and 37:2).

The Genealogies!!

Genesis 5 Revised Standard Version (RSV) This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. 3 When Adam had lived a hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 The days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years; and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Thus all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.

Genesis 5 6 When Seth had lived a hundred and five years, he became the father of Enosh. 7 Seth lived after the birth of Enosh eight hundred and seven years, and had other sons and daughters. 8 Thus all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died. 9 When Enosh had lived ninety years, he became the father of Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after the birth of Kenan eight hundred and fifteen years, and had other sons and daughters. 11 Thus all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died. 12 When Kenan had lived seventy years, he became the father of Ma-hal′alel. 13 Kenan lived after the birth of Ma-hal′alel eight hundred and forty years, and had other sons and daughters. 14 Thus all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died.

Genesis 5 15 When Ma-hal′alel had lived sixty-five years, he became the father of Jared. 16 Ma-hal′alel lived after the birth of Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and had other sons and daughters. 17 Thus all the days of Ma-hal′alel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died. 18 When Jared had lived a hundred and sixty-two years he became the father of Enoch. 19 Jared lived after the birth of Enoch eight hundred years, and had other sons and daughters. 20 Thus all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died…… 25 When Methu′selah had lived a hundred and eighty-seven years, he became the father of Lamech. 26 Methu′selah lived after the birth of Lamech seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had other sons and daughters. 27 Thus all the days of Methu′selah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died.

What is the point?

Genesis 2 15 The L ORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the L ORD God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.’

What is the point? 3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the L ORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Screwtape)

Adam and Eve were not designed to die Death came by sin Sin separates Separation is a feature of Death Spiritual and Physical Man from God Man from woman Mankind from creation Ultimately physical death and separation

What die Adam and Eve think when they saw Abel’s body ?

What has Cain done?

What die Adam and Eve think when they saw Abel’s body ? What has Cain done? What have we done?

Romans 5 12 When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned... 14 Still, everyone died—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did...

Romans 5 For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ... 17 For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.

Death came in Pattern 5 Thus all the days that ……….lived were ……..years; and he died. “For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many.”

Ultimately.. 19 Finally, the water covered even the highest mountains on the earth, 21 All the living things on earth died—birds, domestic animals, wild animals, small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the people. 22 Everything that breathed and lived on dry land died. 23 God wiped out every living thing on the earth—people, livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and the birds of the sky. All were destroyed.

Digression Many arguments about creation Genesis 1&2 You can’t make sense of the world History, geology, palaeontology anthropology, Without Creation and the Flood Sedimentary rocks on Everest Grand Canyon Ayers Rock

Where did the water go? If the earth were flat, like a billiard ball water would cover the earth to a depth of 3Km! God moved up mountains and made ocean trenches to keep the water and allow land to appear The flood was not just rain

What about the rainbow? Gen 9 12 Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. 13 I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. 14 When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, 15 and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life.

The sense reads that no one had seen a rainbow before Gen 2 When the L ORD God made the earth and the heavens, the L ORD God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. 6 Instead, springs [b] (2:6 Or mist) came up from the ground and watered all the landb2:6

“Canopy” theory Earth was like a greenhouse, Tropical & humid No wind Uniform temperature Canopy of water vapour Protected against sun’s radiation

Why do we wear out and Die? “I am not the man I was” We are being renewed daily sometimes As cells divide they make errors and fail It is possible that radiation has damaged these cells so we live shorter lives Or that Noah's genes weren't as good

Genealogy in Gen 10 This is the account of the families of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the three sons of Noah. Many children were born to them after the great flood.

This is the account of the families of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the three sons of Noah. Many children were born to them after the great flood. 2 The descendants of Japheth were..etc The descendants of Ham were..etc The descendants of Shem were..etc

Conclusion 32 These are the clans that descended from Noah’s sons, arranged by nation according to their lines of descent. All the nations of the earth descended from these clans after the great flood.

Racism Is a problem for evolution Survival of fittest Passing on gene pool Bible says we are all the same Physically descended for Adam and Noah Spiritually all have sinned

Gen 10 21 Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber. 22 The sons of Shem: Elam, Ashur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram…. and Shelah the father of Eber. 25 Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.

NLT 25 Eber had two sons. The first was named Peleg (which means “division”), for during his lifetime the people of the world were divided into different language groups. His brother’s name was Joktan. i.e. this fixes when Babel was

One of the themes of Genesis is division God and man Cain and Abel Seth’s line Righteous people -Noah and Enoch Evil people - Nimrod

The Bad Nimrod 8 Cush was the father of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the L ORD ; that is why it is said, ‘Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the L ORD.’ 10 The first centres of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar. 11 From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah – which is the great city.

Why Bad? “Before the Lord” Really means “opposed to the Lord” Nimrod's name means “rebel” Men still rebel against God

Why Bad? He founded Babylon which is bad everything throughout scripture (See Revelation) Babylonians, Assyrians, Hittites all write about him

Why Bad? Legend Died but reborn so worship of his mother and her child (i.e. him) Became part of Babylonian religion Worship of Mother & Child still goes on today……...

Enoch Genesis 6 21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

Hebrews 11 5 It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—“he disappeared, because God took him.” For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God. 6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him

Babel Make a name for ourselves Enoch Had the name as the man who pleased God

Enoch Did not just disappear or fall down a ravine or be eaten by a beast Someone must have seen God take him God also took Elijah Word is “Translated” After Babel you needed a translator

1 Cor 15 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

1 Thessalonians ch 4 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up ( just like Enoch!!) together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord for ever.

Walking Adam and eve walked with God Enoch walked with God So should we…

I John God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all ] sin.

I John 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Echoes of Genesis John’s gospel In the beginning was the Word Light Darkness Liar ( Satan’s lie) Confusion at Babel Fellowship with God still possible- Abel and Enoch and Noah However God will judge – the flood

Walk 2 John 1:6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. 3 John 1:3 It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.

Summary of Whole Bible !! Genesis 1-11 The problem Gen 12 – Rev 22 God’s solution Abraham was justified by faith…

Summary of Whole Bible !! SIN Separation, division and rebellion (God was not pleased with Cain’s offering) Nimrod - the rebel Righteousness Faith & Grace like Abel who offered a sacrifice By Faith Enoch walked with God
