2 Answers to questions on Genesis 4&5
1) Who are Cain & Abel? The sons of Adam and Eve 2) Why was Cain’s sacrifice not as acceptable as Abel’s? Cain’s sacrifice was not acceptable because he had not given from his best crop. It was not a sacrifice of love, but it was done selfishly. 3) Why did Cain kill Abel? Cain was angry that God found Abel’s sacrifice acceptable and not his. 4) What is Cain’s punishment? Cain was made a wanderer and banished to the land of “Nod.” 5) What is the name of Adam & Eve’s third son? Seth 6) What did the people do after the third son was born? The people began to invoke the name of the Lord. 7) Which descendant of Adam did not die? What happened to him? Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him. 8) What did Lamech say about Noah when he was born? “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the toil of our hands.”

3 The Descendants of Cain
The first is Enoch. (Cain builds a city and names it after him. This is not the same Enoch from the line of Seth). After 7 generations, we come to the birth of Lemech. In scripture, 7 is often a symbol of perfection, but in the case of Lemech, he defies God’s will. He breaks the primary covenant of marriage by marrying two women – Adah and Zillah. In the song that Lemech sings to his wives, we see that he treats both women and men as objects and does not recognize that humans are created in God’s image and likeness. The descendants of Cain sought only personal glory in a world of sin and violence.

4 The Descendants of Seth
The descendants of Seth worked for God’s glory instead of their own. They called upon and invoked God’s name. (Worship) We see many generations in the line of Seth, including Enoch – the one who walks with God and is taken by God. We see that the descendants of Seth become the family of God. Including Lemech, the father of Noah.

5 Cainites and Sethites These two lines of Adam had to live together on the same earth. As Sons of God – Sethites And Daughters of Men – Cainites They began to marry and polygamy entered into the family of God. And the marriage covenant is broken. This brings judgment on the on them – their lives are shortened – God’s spirit will not abide in man forever. There descendants “the men of renown” or “shem” meaning “name” decided to make a name for themselves, instead of following God’s will. The world became filled with unjust, violent men, and a culture of pure evil.

6 The Flood The Lord saw the wickedness and evil of man and decided to “blot out the earth the men whom I created – men together with beasts, creeping thing, and birds of the sky; for I regret that I made them.” Genesis 6:7 “But Noah found favor with the Lord.” (Genesis 6:8) He was a righteous man who walked with God God instructs Noah to build an ark with instructions on size and making the ark entirely enclosed. This symbolizes the mercy and grace of God to protect his people. Instructions for taking his family (his wife, sons, and sons’ wives) Instruction for taking animals and food Two of each (male & female) Genesis 6:19 Take everything that is eaten and store it 7 pairs of every “clean” animal (male & female) & 1 pair of every “unclean” Genesis 7:2-3 The Hebrew name for Noah “n-h” is “favor” spelled backwards, “h-n.” This indicates that human perversion and divine grief will not be the last word. 2x2 is P source, 7 clean is J source

7 The Flood continued… Once everyone is on the ark, the rains begin after 7 days. Rains for 40 days and 40 nights (J source) – later it says the rains lasted 150 days (P source) All existence on the earth was blotted out except for Noah and those on the ark On the 17th day of the 7th month, the ark came to rest on Mt. Ararat. (Today is eastern Turkey) Sent out a raven and then a dove to search for ground. After the dove discovered land, God spoke to Noah and told him to come out of the ark. Noah built an altar to the Lord and offered a burnt offering. This was pleasing to God and He formed a covenant with Noah. What was the significance of the number 7? Perfection What about the number 40?

8 Did the flood really happen?
Scientists and biblical scholar are working together to find out. There are many stories from the Middle East and Europe that depict a disastrous flood and one family who survived it. (Example, the Epic of Gilgamesh, pg. 75) Still, the important things has to do with humanity’s relationship with God.

9 The Covenant with Noah Genesis 9:9-13 : "Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you…that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth." And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations:  I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” The Blessing – God will never flood the entire earth again. The Condition – Do not drink the blood of animals or shed human blood. Whoever sheds human blood, his own blood will be shed as well. The Form – The Household family (Noah and his family. Noah’s role is Father.) The Sign - Rainbow

10 The Flood as a Type for Baptism
The flood shows us symbolically what happens at Christian baptism. Our old world of sin is washed away and we are created anew. Like Noah, we still carry the potential of sin with us after baptism, but we have received God’s promise that He will not destroy us. The flood did not rid the world of sin completely because Noah and his family still carried original sin from Adam.

11 The Curse on Canaan Genesis 9:18-28 - Noah’s drunken celebration
Ham’s sin of disrespecting his father Noah curses Ham and Canaan – the land that Ham was to have as a result of being the first born. Blesses Shem as the second son and his descendants.

12 The Tower of Babel Genesis 10 gives the genealogies of the sons of Noah. Genesis 11 tells us how Ham’s nation, in the land of Canaan, decides to make a name for itself. Remember, this did not do Enoch (from the line of Cain) any good. They built a tower to reach to the heavens in order for them to be known and make a name for themselves. While continuing to live evil and sinful ways. God’s punishment for their sinful ways was to confuse their languages so that they could not understand each other and scatter them around the world. (before this, everyone spoke the same language) “If, as one people with one language for all, this is how they have begun to act, then nothing that they may propose to do will be out of their reach. Let us, then, go down and confound their speech there, so that they shall not understand one another’s speech.” Genesis 11:7 Thus it would be known as the Tower of Babel, and is a symbol for everything that is evil.
