18 TOKENS The legal prescription is now the electronic message Paper copies of electronic prescriptions are called tokens There are two types of token: Prescribing Tokens (printed at the GP Practice) Dispensing Tokens (printed at the pharmacy)

20 SMARTCARDS Needed when accessing the spine 1.Setting /changing patient nominations 2.Downloading prescriptions 3.Returning prescriptions 4.Claiming payments Once downloaded, prescriptions can be processed without using a smartcard

21 SMARTCARDS Needed by all members of the Dispensary Team Allows access to restricted patient information Use is strictly controlled -Personal use only – NO SHARING -Identifies person accessing records -Rules apply across NHS

22 SMARTCARDS Security 1.No sharing 2.Do not leave on site 3.Keep safe as if it were a credit card Needed to be able to process EPSR2 Minimum of two working smartcards on site at all times

23 SUPPORT & TRAINING Provided by System Supplier -Training may take various formats and quality varies -Contact System Supplier or Area Manager to find out what training is available -First line support if system breaks down or is not working as expected

25 KEY POINTS Ensure that everyone in your pharmacy that needs an EPS-R2 smartcard has one – PERSONAL USE ONLY – no sharing! Understand how processes will change - use the training provided by your system supplier and involve the whole team Know how to check, register and amend patient nominations Know what to do when a patient arrives expecting a Rx which you don’t have Search by nomination Retrieve from another pharmacy (patient choice is paramount) Liaise with surgery Trace by GUID using the HSCIC Prescription Tracker

26 What to do when things go wrong Report in the first instance to your system supplier – get a reference number If response is unsatisfactory escalate through the CCG Keep the LPC informed any major issues
