Before your Arrival Visa and Immigration All nationalities, except those of the European Union (list) and/or Schengen Countries (list), require a D-Mission visa.(list)list The D-Mission visa is a long stay visa for a minimum period of at least 3.5 months and up to a maximum of 12 months, issued for work or family reasons, at the request of WFP, by the Italian Embassy/Consulate in the country of residence. It cannot be obtained while in Italy. The "mission" visa expressively indicates the purpose of the entry visa: coming to work for an International UN organization. The D-mission visa is only an entry visa and does not constitute a residence permit. Within 8 days of your arrival in Italy, you should visit the Protocol Office in person in order to start the process for converting the visa into either one of these residence documents, as applicable: a) a Special ID Card issued by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or b) a Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) issued by the Italian Ministry of Interior (for Short Term Professionals with a contract of less than 11 months). It is recommended to obtain the visa before your departure. If you have any questions or require assistance to expedite the application process, please contact the WFP Protocol Office by email at askHR@wfp.org. Medical Clearances No vaccinations are required to enter Italy. If you require any additional information, please contact your Human Resources Officer or directly the Medical Unit (medical@wfp.org).medical@wfp.org

The Fiumicino airport is about 30 km south-west of the city centre. It currently has four terminals (T1, T2, T3 and T5) reserved for domestic, international and intercontinental flights. There is an express train between Fiumicino Airport and Stazione Termini (Rome’s main metro and train station) and the journey takes about 30 minutes. There are also other trains and buses to Stazione Tiburtina, Stazione Trastevere, Stazione EUR–Magliana and Piazza dei Cinquecento. The Ciampino airport is a smaller airport, about 15 km south-east of the city, it is becoming popular with low-cost airlines like RyanAir. For taxi service there is a fixed price travelling between the city centre (within the old walls, called Aurelian walls) and the airports: €48 for Fiumicino (“City of Rome” labelled taxis) and €30 for Ciampino, including luggage. Be advised that there is a difference in Taxi services from Fiumicino. Avoid, if possible, "City of Fiumicino“ official taxis, at the airport as it costs a fixed price €60 (instead of €48) for traveling to the city centre. Should you plan to come directly from the Fiumicino airport to WFP HQ, please see detailed route at page 10. Getting to Rome Rome has two major airports, including Leonardo da Vinci (still frequently known by its old name, Fiumicino) which handles scheduled flights and Ciampino which handles mainly charter flights and business aviation. The website of Rome airports provides all information on flight schedules and trasportation linked to the airports.website

ID Card & Fiscal Code (compulsory) WFP staff members working in Rome are required by the Italian Authorities to obtain an Italian Identity Card (or Permesso di Soggiorno, depending on their contract status) and a Fiscal Code which is issued by the Ministry of Finance and is required for many transactions (i.e. the opening of a bank account, the purchase of a car, the renting of an apartment, etc.). You should request for these documents as soon as you start working in Rome. Once you receive your log-on information to WFP intranet, we suggest you to visit the Protocol website below, where you will find all the instructions regarding the application procedures. http://go.wfp.org/web/protocol/ Official Receipts: Please remember to request the issuance of a Scontrino Fiscale or Ricevuta Fiscale (receipt for tax purposes) when buying something or having something repaired in order to claim your rights on a product or on a repair.

Public transportation Buses: From their website you can enter from/to destinations to find the quickest way to get where you want to go!website Subway: Rome underground system is called the Metro (Metropolitana) and has 2 lines; A and B. Link to see the map.Link to see the map From the street level, you will usually be able to identify A Metro station by the large, red "M" displayed prominently near the entrance. The bus & metro tickets can be purchased at newsstands, stores with the Tabacchi “T” sign and ticket booths at the station. A single ride costs € 1,50, a Monthly Pass costs € 35,00 and an Annual Pass costs € 250. See other fares See other fares Strikes: Call 06-0606 if you want information on public transport strikes. Trains: Trenitalia and Italo are the two major train services in Italy. Fast trains go to Florence in 1 ½ hrs; Milan in 3 hrs; and Venice in under 4 hours.TrenitaliaItalo Taxi: Always use an official taxi, licenced by the City of Rome. They are white, with a “TAXI” sign on the roof and the Rome crest (with “SPQR”) on the doors. They have a meter, which should always be used unless you are travelling between central Rome and Fiumicino or Ciampino airport. The meter starts running when you get in, but you have to pay an extra charge of €3.50. To estimate a fare you can use this website. The best number to call a taxi in Rome is 06 3570.this website

Private Vehicles It is recommended before purchasing or importing a car you become familiar with Italian regulations. Both new and used cars/motorbikes are readily available. For advertisements check: Wanted in Rome (an English magazine), Porta Portese (an Italian newspaper), WFP Porta Portese (an internal website for WFP Staff). Also check The Automobile Club Italia (ACI) or Autoscout24. Also take into account that lack of parking, traffic and petrol price, make the scooter an efficient and economical mean of transport in Rome.Wanted in RomePorta PorteseWFP Porta Portese Automobile Club Italia Autoscout24 Driving Licence Internationally recruited staff members in possession of a valid ID card are allowed to drive with their national driving licences in Italy, provided that the driving licence is valid and is accompanied by a translation into Italian and a WFP declaration certified by the Italian authorities. You may obtain the application information and related templates from the Protocol office website (can only be accessed once you have started working officially). Driving in Rome Restricted areas: large areas of the historic centre of Rome are restricted to local car traffic (the yellow area in the map). Residents and authorized people can get a “ZTL” pass which consists in a special electronic device. During specific times (indicated at the entrances, normally after 18.00) the centre may be entered.map In the event of an accident stop the vehicle and leave it in the position the accident occurred. Arrange for the police (Carabinieri or Polizia Municipale) to assess the scene. Make sure you have a copy of the police report form (or denuncia) in your car and a “CID” (an agreement between insurance companies, provided by Italian law), available from the insurance company. It should be filled out in the case of accidents, for which a claim will be processed. You should request the other person to show a copy of their insurance policy (write down all details). Process the claim through your insurance company. If it is ‘mutually agreed upon’ who was at fault, keep the form (available from your insurance agent) in your car. Fill it in and make sure both parties sign it. In the event of theft, contact the police station in the area where the theft occurred. Obtain a police report (denuncia) even if it is a theft of parts of the car. Process the claim through insurance. In the event of a breakdown, you can dial 116 and the Automobile Club of Italy will send someone to help you. Their charges are fair. Avoid the “freelance” tow trucks that could offer their not requested assistance: they charge exorbitant fees.
