1. Presenting the Artist: Lucy Shunk Born April 22, 1987- By: Lucy Shunk

2. Lucy was born and raised in the small town of Reeders, Pennsylvania Her mother stayed home and raised her as a baby, and then worked as an Administrative Assistant for much of her life Her father was a draftsman for an architect, and later went on to design his own software company. Lucy inherited her practice of perfectionism and her love of mathematical drawing from her father.

3. Lucy spent a lot of her childhood enjoying the outdoors with her father. He taught her to fish, took her on many camping and mountain biking trips, and they even went backpacking in the Adirondack mountains when she was your age. All of this time spent outside would inspire Lucy to have a true love of nature throughout her life.

4. Lucy had a love of art from an early age. She frequently attended art summer camps, as well as spending time at a local pottery studio in elementary school. This experience would inspire her at an early age to have a love of ceramics. She also enjoyed making jewelry and drawings for her friends in elementary and middle school.

5. One of Lucy’s major inspirations for creating her artwork was her grandmother. Lucy spent a lot of time as a young girl with her grandmother at her antique booth at the Olde Engine Works in Stroudsburg, Pa. Her grandmother liked to create Pennsylvania Dutch and Folk Art inspired painted furniture and home décor. Another one of Lucy’s major influences growing up was her older sister Ashleigh. Lucy always admired Ashleigh, and her illustrative drawing style would inspire many of Lucy’s later works of art.

6. After graduating high school, Lucy went to Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA to pursue a career as an environmental scientist. After her freshman year, and a C in chemistry, she decided to pursue her true love of art. With a suggestion from a friend, she then decided to become a teacher.

8. What is going on? This photograph shows us a landscape of the artist’s family’s deck and the woods behind it This location is significant to the artist because she spent a lot of summer nights barbequing here with her family Based on the fallen snow, this picture was taken in the winter. I would also guess that it is early winter because of the pumpkins, and they are generally found more in the fall than the spring.

9. I think this photograph is the result of lucky timing, and the unpredictable quality of nature I don’t think the artist had planned on taking this picture until she happened upon it Following taking this picture, the snow might have melted, which completely changes the whole image. It’s not the same without the snow.

10. My Interpretation & Judgment… After learning about this artist, I know that she had a genuine love of nature and all things in it I think she was trying to share this beautiful moment in time with other people by taking a photograph of it If there was a hidden message in this photograph, I think it would be to appreciate every moment and never take anything for granted, because it might not always be that way I really like this piece of art. It makes me feel calm and peaceful. When I look at it I can picture waking up to a freshly fallen snow and going outside and listening to how quiet everything is. I think this photograph could be in an art gallery, and I would definitely love to hang it in my home.

Materials: Digital Cameras Computers Laser Printers Steps to Create the Project: This project would have to take place during the winter, preferably a day or two after a fresh snowfall Students would work in partners to take pictures of things that look different or changed because snow has fallen on them Pictures would then be uploaded to computers, and students will select the best three photographs to print and display
