3 PATHOLOGY: the study of the essential nature of diseases and especially of the structural and functional changes produced by them - how it affects the body HOMEOSTASIS: a relatively stable state of equilibrium or a tendency toward such a state between the different but interdependent elements or groups of elements of an organism, population, or group - how the body stays stablestable Basics cont’d

5 The human body has 10 major systems: 1. Skeletal System6. Digestive System 2. Muscular System7. Reproductive System 3. Respiratory System8. Immune System 4. Circulatory System9. Endocrine System 5. Nervous System10. Urinary System Systems These 10 systems all work together to provide feedback and allow you to live your daily life!

6 There are a variety of careers that exist within the scope of health and wellness…how many can you think of ? So where do we go from here? Doctor Nutritionist Personal trainer Physiotherapist Nurse Rehab specialist Massage therapist Chiropractor Orthopedic surgeon Athletic trainer Psychologist Coach EMT Acupuncture Dietitian

7 Traditionally, it works like this: 1. Get sick/hurt 2. Go to doctor 3. Consume medications 4. Get better But what if there were other options/ideas out there that didn’t follow this model? Ex: Integrative Health CareIntegrative Health Care More than one option…

9 Some of the basic definitions that doctors/health care professionals use everyday: Syndrome:a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality or condition Prognosis:the prospect of recovery as anticipated from the usual course of disease or peculiarities of the case Diagnosis:the art or act of identifying a disease from its signs and symptoms “Paging Dr. Smith…”
