2 Common Law Aka “Case Law” Decisions made by previous judges. Rule of precedent (what has been done in the past.

3 Statute Law Common law decisions that have been formally written into legislation.

4 Levels of Government Federal Gov’t Enacts laws under its own jurisdiction. Relates to the criminal code. eg. Criminal law, employment, banking, marriage and divorce.

5 Provincial Gov’t Gov’t making laws withing your province. E.g. Hospitals, police forces, highways and traffic roads.

6 Local/Municipal Gov’t Local governments that make bylaws for local areas. E.g. How high a fence can be, taking care of your yard around your house.

7 Domestic Law Laws governing activity within the defined boundaries of a nation. Include both statute and case law. Attached article

8 Domestic Law is divided into 2 categories: 1. Substantive Law Laws that define your obligations and rights as citizens Refers to the content of law

9 2. Procedural Law The proper steps that must be applied and followed in any legal action.

10 Criminal Law Identifies crimes and prescribes punishment. To maintain order and provide protection. Described in the Criminal Code and related to federal statutes.

11 Only the federal gov’t has the authority to pass criminal legislation. Crimes are against society Represented by the Crown.

12 Private Law Aka Civil Law Deals with legality between individuals and organizations Regulate conduct and compensate those harmed by wrongful actions of others.

13 Refers to torts (civil injuries), contracts, family law, wills and estates, employment law and property law.

14 Contract Law Rules regarding agreements between people and businesses. Everyday transactions in which people purchase or provide good and services.
