3 Dementia Friendly Communities strand 1. Getting evidence from people with dementia and carers about what would make it possible for them to enjoy a better quality of life in their community. 2. Creating a system of recognition for that places and organisations wanting to become dementia 3. Creating local Dementia Action Alliances across the country to bring together people and organisations 4. Educating the public so that more people understand dementia and start to think about how they can make things better..

5 What values underpin a dementia friendly community? A culture that promotes acceptance, understanding Identified as a place where they felt valued and welcome within their community Where dementia is accepted as a part of a person’s personality and they are free from being stigmatised because of their dementia. A place where people with dementia have equal access to resources within their community and an opportunity to have a voice within it.

8 DFC Pilots Alzheimer’s Society is now piloting a recognition process for dementia friendly communities. The purpose of the recognition process is to show the community in question has committed to action to become dementia friendly A symbol to show that communities are working to become dementia friendly has been developed for use by communities participating in the pilot

Alzheimer’s Society will be working with partners to develop Dementia Friends in the wide range of locations, work places, institutions and organisations likely to come into contact with people with dementia. We want there to be a million Dementia Friends in England by the end of 2015.
