Random thought: Is This The Only Reason People Will Care About Climate Change?

What Is an Urban Heat Island? An urban heat island (UHI) is a city or metropolitan area that is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas. An Urban Heat Island forms when urban structures replace vegetation, and trap heat to make cities hotter. These changes cause urban regions to become warmer than their rural surroundings, forming an "island" of higher temperatures in the landscape.

Where is the temperature highest?

Video 1.What two cities did they talk about? 2.When is the temperature difference most noticeable? 3.Why are cities warmer? / What absorbs the sun’s light? 4.How dangerous are high temperatures? 5.What are three things that can be done to mitigate (lessen) the impact of urban heat islands?

Cities as Heat Islands Answer the questions as we watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t -sXHl3l-rM

Why do we care about the Urban Heat Island effect? Heat islands can affect communities by: – increasing summertime peak energy demand – air conditioning costs – air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions – heat-related illness and mortality

Compare the Urban Heat Island Effect in different cities http://www.climatecentral.org/news /urban-heat-islands-threaten-us- health-17919

Ocean Acidification

Check out what can acids do to organic matter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X zdnrhj-npQ

What is ocean acidification? Ocean acidification is the ongoing decrease in the pH (turning more acidic) of the Earth's oceans, caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from the atmosphere.

What is ocean acidification? What is causing it? The ocean absorbs approximately 1/3rd of the CO2 emitted to the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels. This valuable service comes at a steep ecological cost - the acidification of the ocean. As CO2 dissolves in seawater, the pH of the water decreases, which is called "acidification".

Video Questions: Answer as we watch 1.What are the problems? 2.What is causing it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo- bHt1bOsw

Compare the before and after pictures from ocean acidification

What do you think happened to this coral reef?

Pictures of microorganisms shells after acidification

What were the differences in the before and after pictures?

Read the article “Concern About Ocean Acidification” and answer the questions on your paper

Use the Ocean Acidification Graphs and Comic to answer the next questions You can access these on the wiki or get a blue paper with the info on it

Sea Level Change

Questions for the next video: 1.What is melting? 2.What is rising? 3.According to the guy, are things “Doom and Gloom” or are things just changing? 4.Why is the sea level rising? 5.Are glaciers melting? 6.As sea level rises, what will flood?

Sea Level Rise Video Links (you can use either one) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA0K4hD G2Pg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA0K4hD G2Pg http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/b arrier-islands.html http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/b arrier-islands.html

Sea Level Rise Sea Level rise happens when ice caps melt and the ice turns into more water in the oceans. It is caused by Global Warming, which comes from burning fossil fuels.

Is Sea Level Rising? Using the data/ graphs from NASA, answer the questions on your paper. You can access this data on the wiki, or you can get a yellow paper packet to use
