Results from the Grid 3.0 Interoperability Workshop Discussion with the SGIP Technical Committee 2/16/16

Background and Objectives The Grid 3.0 Interoperability Workshop was held at AEP’s office in Tulsa, OK on December 12 & 13 The workshop’s objective was to identify the most significant activities that would advance the electricity sector towards interoperability The broader objective of Grid 3.0 is to promote coordination and collaboration between organizations that are working to advance interoperability The objective of today’s discussion with the Technical Committee is to review the workshop results

Workshop Results: High- Level Categories 1.Making the Case for Interoperability 2.Implementing Interoperability 3.Testing and Certification 4.Interoperability Development 5.Interoperability Curricula

Making the Case for Interoperability All stakeholders (utilities, suppliers, regulators, etc.) need to understand the importance and value of interoperability. Develop a methodology for performing a cost benefit analysis for interoperability Develop examples of interoperability cost benefit analysis Publish interoperability case studies that include a cost benefit analysis Develop communication / outreach materials (such as an infographic, etc.) that convey the importance and value of interoperability for different audiences (utilities, regulators, etc.)

Making the Case for Interoperability Specific tasks from the workshop: Identify and broadly distribute quantitative interoperability cost/benefit analyses Collect and publish project success stories – popular, successful projects that have a holistic view of interoperability Develop methods and tools to visualize the interconnectedness of utility systems Develop a simple model to evaluate the value of interoperability – Ron’s graphic Update GWAC IMM to expose ROI for moving from Level X to Level Y Accelerate 61850 and CIM deployment through case studies (SCE) that include and highlight the business case Regulatory and legislative engagement – develop and update collateral focusing on interoperability and compatibility of policy with regulation and business model desirements. Note – closely linked to the Business and Regulatory future state. Develop the AL Gore exponential graphic equivalent Gather information on what legislators and regulators are asking of their utilities and identify common issues to focus on and offer solutions to

Implementing Interoperability Description: Develop a set of tools and aids that will help utilities implement equipment and systems that interoperate. Specific tasks from the workshop: Develop best practices for procurement of interoperable systems Publish interoperability case studies that include a cost benefit analysis Create GE like navigable tool on standards Develop reference implementations for key interoperability standards Develop visualization of the well-defined points of interoperability Develop aids that will help with workforce development and change management issues associated with implementing interoperability

Testing and Certification Description: Accelerate the creation of a standards testing and certification ecosystem Specific tasks from the workshop: Create a list of standards that do not have a certification process and prioritize those that can best benefit from a test program Gather test cases (not to be confused with test scripts) for evaluating product and system interoperability - Publish those that are available (links) Identify gaps in test cases and who could fill them Develop draft work plans to develop test programs Develop a set of best practices around interoperability testing – what are the requirements Organize Plugfests

Interoperability Development Description: Create a set of tools and aids that will help standards development efforts Specific tasks from the workshop: Identify standards gaps and recommend organizations including SDO’s that can address them – numerous examples identified Publish a means to quickly find and search use case databases – semantic web concept Develop a list and description of high level actors and key well defined points of interoperability Identify groups to develop common language – similar to common commercial code Develop common language repository – links to existing. Include visualizations including infographics

Interoperability Curricula Description: Develop curricula for universities to ensure that students are exposed to available interoperability best practices Get students involved to help make it fun
