Scratch Resistant Glass NASA's Dr. Ted Wydeven of the Ames Research Center developed a clear plastic fim that resisted scratching. This film was applied to space helmet visors and other plastic surfaces used in space. The Bausch&Lomb optics company used this technology to create scratch resistant eyeglasses for consumers. This has saved consumers millions of dollars because they have not had to replace scratched glasses as often.

Shoe Technology The space suit developed for the Apollo space missions included new shoe tecnology that gave the astronauts a spring in their step. This technology was adapted to consumer use by the KangaROOS shoe company in the 1980’s. Now most athletic shoe companies use this technology to reduce stress on the ankles and knees of athletes, preventing serious injury. From this To this

Cordless Drill Technology During the Apollo Program, NASA approached the Black& Decker Company who had developed a cordless drill to take samples of the Moon’s surface. NASA scientists worked with Black&Decker technicians to refine and advance the cordless technology to be more efficient in the space environment. Black&Decker then used this technology to create better drills for their earth bound customers. Now, it is hard to find drills with cords atteched to them in any store.

Water Filtration Technology Water is very important in space. Without clean water, astronauts will die. Although water filters existed before the space program, NASA scientists perfected the filtering process to be more efficient and produce cleaner water in extreme conditions. NASA introduced Ionized charcoal to filters that produced pure water, even from urine. Today, most people drink filtered water at some point.

Light Emitting Diodes help plants grow in zero gravety Light Emitting Diode LED (light emitting diode) lights were developed to reproduce the effects of the sun on plant experiments in space, without using much electricity. This same technology is used to treat certain types of skin cancer. LED technology is used to treat skin cancer.
