8 Montgomery and Rommel chased each other back and forth across North Africa between 1940 and late 1942. Neither commander could gain a clear advantage.

9 In late 1942 the Western Task Force of the U.S. Army under the command of Patton landed in Morocco.

11 “Operation Torch” began on November 8th, 1942. Montgomery and Patton attacked Rommel from the West and East, leaving him no room to retreat. I think I’m in trouble!

17 The first step in the Allied invasion of Europe.

18 The first phase was to conquer Messina on the island of Sicily.

19 On July 10 th, 1943 Patton and Montgomery attacked Sicily. As in Africa, Montgomery came from the East and Patton from the West.

20 Sicily fell to the Allies on August 17 th, 1943.

28 The fighting in the Italian campaign was very difficult…the mountainous terrain provided excellent shelter for German troops and slowed allied advances. Still, the Allies under Patton and Montgomery pushed forward.

35 Rome fell in June of 1944. The Italian Campaign was then put on the back burner pending Operation Overlord.
