Windows 10 Settings Some need to be changed

Nine Main Settings Groups System Devices Network & Internet Personalization Accounts

Main Settings Groups Time & language Ease of access Privacy Update & security

Settings Each of these main categories has at least one level below it, some have more than one. Some of the choices automatically open the proper point in Control Panel to affect the parameters (Windows 10 settings are somewhat divided between the Settings App and the Control Panel)

System: Display Change size of items Orientation (Portrait/Landscape) Advanced display settings (Resolution)

System: Notifications & actions Notifications & actions (choose quick actions, notifications (on/off for various things), Show notifications from these apps)

System: Apps & features Manage optional features (features like language OCR added here) Search, sort, filter, uninstall, or move an app See how much space each app takes

System: Storage Choose a drive to see what’s taking up space (shows how much space is used by system, apps, documents, etc.) Save location (apps, documents, music, pictures, videos – allows changing drive)

System: Offline maps Download maps to search when not connected (most useful on tablets/phones) Storage location Metered connections Map updates

System: Default apps Choose default apps (email, maps, music player, photo viewer, video player, web browser, reset to defaults) Choose default apps by file type Choose default apps by protocol Set defaults by app (Control Panel)

About (continued) Installed RAM System type Pen & touch Change product key or upgrade edition Support (Manufacturer, their website) Related Settings (additional administrative tools – Control Panel, Bitlocker settings, Device Manager, System info)

Devices Bluetooth Printers Mouse Other device settings and information

Devices: Printers & scanners Add printer or scanner Printers & scanners Let Windows manage my default printer (this causes the last chosen printer to be default) Download over metered connections (device drivers, info, and apps for new devices)

Devices: Connected devices Add a device Other devices (audio device, mouse, card readers, keyboards, monitors, etc.) Download over metered connections

Devices: AutoPlay Use for all media and devices (on/off switch) Choose AutoPlay defaults Related settings

Devices: USB Notify me if there are issues connecting to USB devices

Network & Internet Exactly what is seen here will depend on the computer. Example: my main computer does not have a wireless adapter, nor a broadband (cellular) adapter. Those would be shown on something like a tablet with wireless and cellular connections.

Network: Data usage Overview – data usage from last 30 days (usage details will show usage by application) Related settings (switches to storage settings from System menu)

Network: Airplane mode On devices with wireless and/or cellular connections, shuts off ALL with one on/off switch

Network: VPN Add a VPN connection VPN Advanced settings (allow over Metered networks – Allow connect while Roaming) Note that many commercial VPN types require their own specific software for VPN

Network: Dial-up Setup a new connection (Control Panel) ( yes, there are still places where dial- up is all that is available at any moderate price )

Network: Ethernet Ethernet (the default name is Local Area Connection – click on the icon) Make this PC discoverable – (this one is important, can change public vs private network here) Properties (IP address, DNS servers, etc.) (Missing but should be– cannot set an Ethernet port as a metered connection)

Network: Proxy Automatic proxy setup (automatically detect, use setup script) Manual proxy setup (use a proxy server, IP address, port, except for) (Proxy servers are more likely in a corporate environment)

Personalization Most of the “lookie-feelie” stuff lives here

Accounts This is a very important section. Microsoft accounts are in email form (joeblow@lookie.org) Local accounts are in older Windows form (Joeblow)joeblow@lookie.org This is also where family accounts are setup, with the ability to allow limited access

Accounts: Your email & accounts At the top, the logged on username will be displayed, with info on whether user is an administrator or not. Manage my Microsoft account – this link leads to a web page where Microsoft accounts can be changed and managed. Note that Windows 10 computers are trusted or not – the account holder must provide a phone or text method of verification.

Accounts: Your email & account The Microsoft web page is also where arrangements are made to setup financial information (credit card) for making purchases from the Microsoft store. Product keys, subscription information, and so forth is stored as a part of your Microsoft account.

Email & Accounts Microsoft accounts can also be setup to have a couple of added email addresses called “alias.” This can be useful if your account email provider suddenly goes dead. One of the aliases is the primary. You cannot get apps from the Microsoft store without logging in with a Microsoft account (and paying for the non-free apps)

Email & accounts Sign in with a local account instead. (most commonly used in business, but very useful as a backup way to access Windows if your profile gets hosed) Your picture Create your picture Email, calendar, and contacts Accounts used by other apps

Email & accounts Add a Microsoft account Add a work or school account (this works for adding a Microsoft account for Office 365 if the account name is different from the login account – more likely in business and corporate use)

Accounts: Sign in options Require sign-in (never or when PC wakes) Password (can change it here) PIN (add – 4 digit PIN instead of password) Picture password (uses camera on computer, requires Windows 10 compliant camera with infra-red capability) Fingerprint reader would show here if computer is equipped

Accounts: Work access Connect to work or school Sign in to Azure AD (active directory) Add a work or school account Enroll in device management Related settings (join or leave an organization, add or remove a management package)

Accounts: Family & other users Your family (add a family member) Other users (add someone else to this PC) Assigned access (this restricts the account to ONE Windows store app – mostly useful for kiosk setups)

Accounts: Sync your settings Sync settings (on/off) Individual sync settings (on/off): Theme, Internet Explorer/Edge settings, passwords, language preferences, ease of access, other Windows settings

Time & language Date & time (set time automatically, Set time zone automatically, change date & time, time zone, Adjust for daylight saving time automatically Region & language (country or region, languages (add a language) Related settings Speech (Choose the language you speak with your device. Text-to speech {choose voice} Microphone)

Update & Security View your update history (can uninstall updates, but by default they will be re- installed automatically. There is a process involving a Microsoft tool to hide non- security updates to be used for example when a device driver update causes problems

Updates & Security Choose how updates are delivered (important). Updates from more than one place (on/off) Get updates from and sent updates to PCs on my local network OR to PCs on my local network AND PCs on the Internet (Original W10 build chose both local and Internet PCs, Nov upgrade changed to local)

Updates & Security Windows Defender Real time protection, Cloud based protection, Automatic sample submission, Exclusions. The W10 Defender will automatically start protecting if another installed A/V product becomes significantly outdated or non- functional

Updates & Security Backup (Backup using File History {add a drive, more options}) Recovery (Reset this PC, Go back to an earlier build. Advanced startup) Activation (shows status, allows changing product key For Developers (use developer features)
