ENERGY AND POWER TECHNOLOGY Unit 5

ENERGY AND POWER TECHNOLOGY  Devices and/or systems that convert, transmit, or process energy.  Examples?

ENERGY  The ability to do work  To make things change, make things, happen, or to start motion  Can transfer (move) or transform (change), but can’t be destroyed

RENEWABLE ENERGY  Energy that can be reused  Examples:  Energy from the sun, wind, or water

NON-RENEWABLE  Energy that can be used once  Examples:  Energy created from coal or oil

 As we view the video, please pay close attention. You will have a short writing activity after the video.  Take notes on the energy sources, the technology used to harness the energy, and how that technology works.  Safety Smart with Bill Nye: Renewable Energy

WRITING ACTIVITY  Choose ONE alternative energy technology (wind turbine, solar panel, etc.) and write a paragraph about how it works.  This activity should be completed in your EDJ

THINK, PAIR, SHARE  Which alternative energy source do you think would be the best for this area and why?

TYPES OF ENERGY  Biomass – combustion of materials that originate from living things  Geothermal – taps steam from water heated underground and uses it to spin turbines  Hydrogen Power – uses electricity to breakdown water into hydrogen gas

TYPES OF ENERGY  Hydroelectricity – generates electricity by harnessing the power of flowing water  Solar Energy – uses energy from the sun  Tidal Energy – harnesses the energy from the ocean tides  Wind Energy – energy harnessed from the wind

PAIR TO SHARE Discuss, with someone close to you, if and when you have seen any of these energy sources being used. Prepare to share with the class.

TECHNOLOGY TO THE RESCUE  Technological solutions and systems are developed to reduce, prevent or eliminate community driven environmental problems. PROBLEM SOLUTION

 Often times existing technologies are used to identify and examine the extent of a problem in order to develop alternative solutions.  Decisions to develop technologies often put environmental and economic concerns in direct competition with each other.

 Carbon Dioxide  A chemical compound composed of one carbon and two oxygen atoms. It is often referred to by its formula CO2. It is present in the Earth's atmosphere at a low concentration and acts as a greenhouse gas.  Carbon Footprint  A measure of the impact on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide.

 Eco Friendly  'Environmentally friendly'  A term often used to refer to a product that is considered to inflict minimal harm on the environment.  Amenities  A feature that provides comfort, convenience, or pleasure.  Amenities – bathroom, kitchen

WHAT MAKES A HOME ECO- FRIENDLY? -Maximizing energy efficiency -Minimizing energy consumption -Maximizing water efficiency -Minimizing water consumption -Choosing sustainable building materials

WHAT MAKES A NEIGHBORHOOD ECO-FRIENDLY? -It encourages walking -It contains public spaces/recreation centers -It contains a public transportation system -It has a possibility for local food production -It contains schools -It is located near areas of employment -Designed around nature
