Electricity from biomass: comparison between USA and China ALAN ARANA ALFREDO TORTOLERO GABRIEL GUZMAN VICTOR IBARRA ALEJANDRO FEREZ TEAM 5

Biomass Provides about 14% of the world´s energy, its energy that is provided from incineration of forests and wastes to produce electricity and heat. Biomass can be used as: Combustion to produce heat. Biofuel (In order to convert it needs several methods thermal, chemical, and biochemical) Methane gas. Biodiesel.

Biofuels Derived from sugarcane and corn to produce bioethanol and alcohol fuel.

Biomass Issues:  Forests are destroyed.  The climate is heated.  Crop lands are damaged.  Increased health problems.

Biochemical Method

USA

USA Available Renewable Energy

China Biomass Growth

China´s Alternatives Resources China is planning to build a 2,000 MW solar power energy using eSolar technology, which is a California Company.

Future Plans The U.S. and Chinese governments both hope that increased use of renewable energy sources such as hydro, wind, and solar power.

Policies The Government provides financial subsidies for biomass power generation. Investment policies. Tax exception.

Environmental Impact Increased erosion due to foresting Chemical pollution due to increased fertilizers & pesticides Degradation of soil quality after continual use Loss of biodiversity due to “monoculture” trees planted

CHINA VS USA Renewable Energy

Conclusion Biomass is growing exponentially. We can produce biodiesel which eventually can be used in transportation. The second generation of biofuels will not compete with the food industry Rapid growth after second generation of processes is developed
