3 + Apprenticeship ■ When a person learns a specific trade from a trained professional; can be part of a technical/vocational college program or part of a trade union program. ■ Apprenticeships usually run for 2 to 4 years, however, may be longer or shorter depending on the apprenticeship. ■ Apprenticeships can be full time or part time. They can also be started while undertaking school studies. ■ Receive half the salary that you will earn once you have completed it.

5 + On-the-Job Training ■ When a person learns the skills of a job while working for pay. ■ Offered by many companies ■ Available to new and current workers

6 + Trade Schools ■ A school that provides instruction for a specific employment ■ Usually more expensive than vocational-technical program ■ Examples: ITT Building & Construction Construction Management Electrician Plumbing HVAC Inspection Carpentry Welding Automotive

7 + Vocational-Technical Centers ■ Teaches skills in particular career areas ■ Examples: cosmetology, computer technology ■ Relatively inexpensive

8 + Community and Technical Colleges ■ Associates degree (AA) for 2 year program ■ Less expensive then trade schools and 4 year colleges and universities ■ May lead to study at a four-year college or university

9 + Four-Year Colleges and University ■ Bachelor’s degree for four years of study and advance degrees beyond four years (master’s, doctorate) ■ Preparation for a variety of careers ■ Often expensive ■ Public or Private

10 + Military ■ Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force ■ Training in more than 200 different jobs, including health technician and air-traffic controller ■ Minium of 4 year active duty required ■ Possible to attend school before or during service ■ Education after service sometimes paid for

11 + Job Corps ■ Free residential vocational school ■ 16-24 years old ■ Job Training, GED, or High School Diploma ■ Must be low income and drug/violence free to be eligible ■ Career Training Areas: Painting & Wallpapering, Office Administration, Culinary Arts, Health Occupations, Trade Occupations ■ Located in St. Paul; also, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan

12 + Continuing Education ■ Courses and programs that help adults complete education, brush up on skills, pursue new paths ■ Available at high schools, colleges, and universities

13 + Peace Corps ■ Living allowance and vacation time ■ Full medical and dental coverage ■ Student loan assistance and unique graduate school opportunities ■ Transition funds after service and job support services ■ Marketable professional skills ■ Advantages in federal employment ■ Opportunities for short-term assignments through Peace Corps Response ■ Travel to and from country of service ■ No fee to participate, but a 27 month commitment
