Chapter 2 Research Methods Please fill in your slides as we proceed
2
Research Design A detailed plan or method for obtaining data scientifically You need to choose the design carefully to get the best results
3
Experiments An artificially created controlled situation which allows the researcher to manipulate variables Experimental Group – given the independent variable Control Group – is NOT given the independent variable
4
The dependent variable is 'dependent' on the independent variable. As the experimenter changes the independent variable, the change in the dependent variable is observed and recorded. Review: Independent and Dependent Variables
5
There are many different ways to gather information: Participant Observation Naturalistic Observation Survey Interview Questionnaire Secondary Analysis
6
Observations Collecting of information through either: 1. Participant observation 2. Naturalistic observation
7
Participant Observation The researcher joins a group for a period of time to understand how it works
8
Naturalistic Observation The researcher watches a group without interfering recording their natural behavior Disadvantages Can be time consuming and expensive. Does not allow for scientific control of variables. Experimenters cannot control extraneous variables. Subjects may be aware of the observer and may act differently as a result.
9
Hawthorne Effect Subjects of a research experiment act differently than normal because they know they are being observed
10
Survey A study, generally in the form of an interview or questionnaire Provides information on how people think and act Disadvantages: Can be affected by an unrepresentative sample or poor questions. Participants can affect the outcome. Some participants try to please the researcher, lie to make themselves look better, or have mistaken memories.

Advantages and Disadvantages
12
Interview A verbal question and answer session between two or more people
13
Advantages and Disadvantages
14
Questionnaire A set of questions asked with the intent of finding out opinions, interests, and thoughts
15
Advantages and Disadvantages
18
Secondary Analysis Research that makes use of publicly accessible information and data
