Underlying Philosophy of Employability Enhancement Employability enhancement a core part of a more rounded higher education experience A three year reflective process Underlying principles – pursuit of the 3G mind set Goodness (Integrity) Global reach (vision) Grit (Determination) Consistent with Greenwich Graduate Attributes and professional body expectations Reed and Stoltz (2013) Put your Mindset to work

The Process and Outcomes Increased student self awareness and recognition of skills and attributes Improved ability to articulate and demonstrate skills and attributes More justifiably confident and competitive graduates Better student experience and Improved DLHE statistics

Level 4 location and content ALL STUDENTS OBIO 1017 BIOL 1031 ENVI 1039 Johari Window Value of self - reflection Introducing Pebblepad PDP Essential writing Intro to networking Level 5 location and content ALL STUDENTS BIOT 1004 BIOL 1032 GEOG 1024 Improving your CV Assessment centres Verbal communication Body language Pebblepad profile Placements Level 6 location and content CORE COURSE CHEM 1082 Meaning of “manager” Project management Professional ethics Leadership models Psychometric testing Interview techniques Fine tuning the CV Employability lessons from employers/former students Pebblepad profile INVOLVEMENT OF MEDWAY GET TEAM ESSENTIAL THROUGHOUT

“Everything we do is about employability” Engineering degrees are about problem solving and every job advert is a rephrasing of “we have a problem and we need someone to solve it” Engineering institutional accreditation means specific technical employability issues are embedded in every programme GEM recognises transferable skills and knowledge Minimum standard required Why are our DLHE statistics not 100%? What is the constraint on our graduates’ careers? Engineering and Employability

The future in Engineering – explicit preparation for the workplace We want and need to go beyond the standard Programmes are currently being redesigned to make more explicit – Analytical rigour – Laboratory practice and methodology – Design project Explicit connection to employability enhancement emphasised in redesign from level 4 Employability and study skills complementary

LESSONS EMPLOYABILITY LESSONS Promote it effectively Embed it in the programmes Assess it formally FURTHER WORK Better DLHE returns More applications for placements Progression and consistency across faculty Student attitudes Fine tuning GEM tool Build passport into Pebblepad Programme redesign where needed
