2 Welcome to the Online Briefing MANAGERS ORIENTATION PROGRAM

3 Where Did it All Begin? Focus groups were held with new managers, and also with HR personnel to get feedback on new managers’ needs. Replies were put together to assess the greatest needs new managers have when beginning state service, or moving from bargaining units into management positions.

4 What Did We Ask? What information would help you (or your managers) be more effective in your agency? What would make your being a manager in the State of Connecticut more appealing? What kind of on-going support do you need as a manager to be effective in state government? What are your thoughts about logistics and delivery of orientation?

5 Results The information collected resulted in the 7 module orientation program now available to you, as a State of Connecticut manager. We will continue assessing this program and add follow-up and resources as needed.

6 Online Briefing Session This session will explain your roles as managers and program expectations of the Managers Orientation Program.

7 Program Eligibility The State of Connecticut “Managers Orientation Program” is designed for State of Connecticut managers in the managerial pay plan.

8 Program Eligibility It is recommended that as a new manager, you start the program within the first six months of employment and after you have completed your own agency’s new employee orientation program.

9 Program Objectives To provide you with essential information resulting in the accomplishment of business results in your agency. This information will consist of a broad overview concerning a multitude of topics, as well as resources to take back to your agency to aid in accurate completion of day-to-day work.

10 Program Objectives You will be provided a unique opportunity to network with peers as you remain together for the duration of the program. This orientation will provide a foundational overview of important topics. This program will also begin building critical managerial competencies in the following areas:

11 Managerial Competencies Upholds Responsibilities as a State Manager Communication/ Interpersonal Skills Decision Making Leadership Strategic Planning Human Resource Management

12 Managerial Competencies, Cont… Program/Project Management Fiscal Management Innovation and Change Management Learning and Achievement Orientation

13 Program Content Module 1: Management in State Government Module 2: The Boundaries Modules 3-6: Human Resources Management Module 7: Your Career as a State Manager

14 Program Delivery Seven days of Orientation 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Module 7 including Graduation concludes at 2:00pm) Programs take place on Thursdays Attendance is critical at all sessions! Subject matter experts deliver all the orientation material

15 Program Requirement Each participant must complete the statutory/required courses prior to Module 7… Diversity Training Workplace Violence Prevention Training Sexual Harassment Training for Managers and Supervisors Courses are available through the DAS Learning Center or at your agency. Verification of attendance will need to be provided from your HR department.

16 Program Norms Be an active participant – ask questions and share ideas Be respectful – listen attentively Be punctual – arrive on time Be considerate – set cell phones to vibrate

17 Program Recognition After attending all modules of the program, you will be awarded a certificate of completion.

18 Additionally… You may register for a variety of other courses to enhance your knowledge and skills after completing this program.
