2 Space Planning & Facilities Upgrades 2004 Using CDBG Funds the Twp commissioned a Space Planning Study (Himmel & Wilson) Weed the Collections, some significantly Place slower moving materials in remote storage Reprogram (redesign) floor plans by function Build modest additions at 4 of the libraries

3 Space Planning & Facilities Upgrades 2005 Library Facilities Master Plan created adding deferred maintenance to Himmel & Wilson recommendations 80 projects identified 20 completed to date

4 Space Planning & Facilities Upgrades 2006 Purchased 104 Ardmore Ave for remote storage 2006/7 Studies were completed at all six libraries to redesign floor plans by function 2008 VITETTA architects designed renovations based on all the previous studies & their own investigations

5 Space Planning & Facilities Upgrades Renovations address these issues: ADA Accessibility Health, safety & welfare Deferred maintenance Space constriction Technology infrastructure

6 Space Planning & Facilities Upgrades A 7 th project embedded in each cost estimate enables RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) in all six libraries for Asset Management & Efficiency Security systems Self checkout Inventory control Automated book sorting

7 Space Planning & Facilities Upgrades Costs estimates for six projects $23.6 million 2009 Ludington Library - $10.6 million 2010 Bala Library - $6.3 million 2011 Ardmore Library - $1.1 million 2011 Gladwyne Library - $1.3 million 2012 Belmont Hills - $1.6 million 2013 Penn Wynne - $2.7 million

8 Space Planning & Facilities Upgrades The Lower Merion Library Foundation is carrying out a Capital Campaign to fund $5 – 7 million of project costs Approximately 150 volunteers will assist the Campaign Public & private sector grants

9 Ludington Library - Proposed Renovation & Addition 2009

10 Ludington Library Renovation 2009 Founded 1917. Current building constructed in 1926. Renovated 3 times in 80 years Renovate 29,000 Sq ft & add 10,400 Sq ft Improve ADA accessibility Complete major deferred maintenance Upgrade or replace multiple HVAC systems Put a “presence” on the street – key component in the Bryn Mawr Master Plan Campaign & Grant Funding $2.6 million

11 Bala Cynwyd Library Renovation 2010

12 Founded 1915. Current building constructed in 1974. Acquired 2,600 sq ft from Unit #1, 1999 Renovate 19,000 sq ft & add 6,000 Improve ADA accessibility Replace elevator and stairs Reorganize both floors Create a new conference room Create a Young Adult area Replace HVAC & Upgrade roof Campaign & grant funding $1.6 million

13 Ardmore Library Renovation 2011

14 Founded 1899. Historic building dates to 1917 & 1924 - last renovated in 1995/96 Renovate 1,300 sq ft Replace & move the elevator Open the Loft area to public Refurbish children’s room Reorganize adult areas Campaign funding $200,000

15 Gladwyne Library Renovation 2011

16 Founded 1921 - historic structure renovated several times - Accessibility issues Renovate 1,000 sq ft Improve ADA accessibility Install exterior elevator Upgrade restrooms Establish a storm sewer connection Redesign children’s room Campaign funding $250,000

17 Belmont Hills Library Renovation 2012

18 Founded 1935. Current building constructed in 1969. No major renovations Renovate 105 sq ft & add 1,800 Redesign front entrance for accessibility Upgrade the ADA ramp to front entrance Create a rear entrance off parking lot Add meeting room, storage & staff areas Campaign funding $350,000

19 Penn Wynne Library Renovation 2013

20 Founded 1929. Current building constructed in 1949 - expanded in 1959 &1989 Renovate 4,500 sq ft & add 1,600 Improve ADA accessibility Remove second floor access Create a 1 st floor meeting room Expand seating & collection space Campaign funding $550,000

21 Library Renovation Projects Lower Merion Library System, Lower Merion Library Foundation Local Library Boards – Urge Approval of VITETTA Designs Move to “Construction Documents” phase for Ludington (2008) & Bala (2009) projects
