3 Interpersonal Relationships The ability to relate well with others is a characteristic of successful people in all walks of life. Fitting in is necessary at school, work, home and when “at play.” This does not mean you need to have a close relationship with everyone to earn respect and acceptance.

4 Interpersonal Relationships Poor communication = unpleasant relationships It is the responsibility of every person to forge positive relationships

5 Belonging to a Group You will be a member of a group of some sort at every age of your life: ▫Toddler – pre-school ▫Kid – camp or sports team ▫Teen – employee, team, choir, band, class, college ▫Adult – company, political party, city Effective groups have equality among members Members have a sense of belonging, importance & purpose

6 Belonging to a Group You are more likely to follow established rules of a group if you are involved in the process of group communication and problem solving. The same is true of co-workers. Each member of a successful work team must be able to use interpersonal and negotiation skills. Differences between team members should be seen as strengths rather than problems.

8 Making Others Feel They Belong There are many ways to make people feel like they belong. CLASS FEUD Can you name the top way to make someone feel they belong? In your groups determine the ways you think most people find they are welcomed.

9 Leadership If every group runs best when they are equal how does leadership work? Every group has its own style and chooses a leader with specific qualities to best steer the group. 4 Types of Leaders ▫Democratic Group ▫Closed Group ▫Shared Leadership ▫Controlled Leadership
