1 UNFCCC Secretariat Sustainable Development Mechanisms Programme UN Online Platform for Voluntary Cancellation of CERs General information

2 Agenda item 2.2 Paragraph 4 of the annotated agenda 2 Background Two new activities have been implemented: 1.Encouraging individuals, organizations and other stakeholders to offset their climate footprint; 2.The development of an online platform to allow the general public to voluntarily cancel CERs.  The international carbon market is in a depressed situation, and CDM project developers have difficulties selling their CERs.  The CDM market is not easily accessible but individual or small business.  We need a global climate neutral society by 2100 or earlier.

3 Agenda item 2.2 Paragraph 4 of the annotated agenda 3 Goals of the platform 1.To support CDM project developers by providing an additional channel to offer their CERs for sale (and immediate cancellation in the CDM Registry). 2.To allow the public to support mitigation action (and sustainable development) in a voluntary manner.

4 Agenda item 2.2 Paragraph 4 of the annotated agenda 4 Key characteristics of the platform  Makes CERs available for voluntary cancellation (VC) easily visible and searchable;  Only CERs located in the CDM registry are offered (CP1 and CP2);  Built on a standard e-commerce solution similar to other online multi-stores where users can search, identify CERs and pay the corresponding price;  Simple process to pay for the VC followed by cancellation of the CERs in the CDM registry;  For each purchase a certificate of cancellation is issued by the CDM registry to the buyer;  No brokerage fee charged to any user.
