4 Activity 4: Introduction http://www.johndclare.net/ RoadtoWWII2.htm AIMEXPLANATION To abolish the Treaty of Versailles To expand German territory To defeat Communism Many British people wanted peace. After the horrors of World War One and all the death and destruction, they were desperate to avoid a repeat of this and thought that Chamberlain was right to do anything he could to avoid another war. Many people in Britain were more scared of the leader of Russia (Joseph Stalin) and the spread of Communism. They hoped that a strong Germany would stop the growth of Communist Russia. Many people felt that events in Europe were not Britain's business. Britain and France were still recovering from the Depression. They had debts and huge unemployment. Britain did not have allies who were prepared to fight with her against Germany in 1938. America, for example wanted to stay out of European affairs and Britain didn’t know if se could rely on countries from her empire (i.e. Canada) for support. Appeasement gave Britain time to rearm. In 1938, Britain’s army was small and its weapons were old. The British army leaders told Chamberlain that they were not sure that they were ready for another war. Appeasement encouraged Hitler to be aggressive because it made it look like Britain would do anything to avoid war. It encouraged Hitler to take over more countries. Many people thought that Hitler’s demands were quite fair. They said he was just putting right the unfair parts of the Treaty of Versailles. If the Sudeten Germans wanted to join Germany, Britain should not risk war to stop them. Chamberlain was weak. He was unwilling to make important decisions and stand up to Hitler. He put too much trust in Hitler’s promises and was wrong to believe that Hitler was trustworthy. Appeasement worried other countries in Eastern Europe such as Russia. If Britain and France were not prepared to defend Czechoslovakia, how would they defend other countries like Russia? Appeasement was naïve. Hitler has always said he intended to conquer Eastern Europe, for instance in Mein Kampf. Britain should have realised Hitler was never going to stop. Appeasement made Germany stronger. In taking over land, Germany got the factories and raw materials it needed. Delaying war also gave Germany time to build up its army and weapons. Appeasement gave Britain the moral high ground – when war came, Britons knew they had done everything possible to keep the peace. Appeasement abandoned millions of people to the Nazis (including in Austria and Czechoslovakia) and caused the Second World War by encouraging Hitler to think he could do anything. Appeasement also meant that the war took place on a much larger scale than it would have if something had been done sooner as Hitler may have not drawn his entire population of native Germans home from other countries such as Poland and would not have had the scale of army that he had by the time war had commenced. Britain felt that their Empire had to be her priority – her military resources were overstretched as it was, trying t defend her many colonies. For appeasement Against appeasement Appeasement was giving Hitler what he wanted to avoid a war
