Outcomes & Objectives Objectives To understand the long and short term causes of the 1965 Watts Riots. Outcomes 1. Read the Wikipedia article on the Watts Riots and study the images. 2. Use ‘Add Text’ to write seven causes and seven consequences of the riots. 3. Copy-&-Paste all the causes into one of two groups; short-term and long-term causes. 4. Explain which you think is the most important group of causes. Black Peoples of the USA (3): How have the experiences of Black Peoples in the USA changed from 1619 to 2003? History Key Stage 3 Black Peoples of the USA Task What caused the Watts Riots of 1965? What were the consequences? Image: http://members.aol.c om/fttbic/kingmalcol m.jpg

TASK: Read the Wikipedia article on the 1965 Watts Riots.1965 Watts Riots http://info.detnews.com/dn/history/riot/images/fire.gif http://www.picturehistory.com/images/products/1/3/0/prod _13039.jpg http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.picturehistory.com/images/products/thu mbnails/1/3/0/prod_13044_s.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.picturehistory.com/find/start/72%3Fc% 3D187%3Bp%3D7&h=70&w=100&sz=3&hl=en&start=18&um=1&tbnid=cTCT5BwftHlJsM:&tb nh=57&tbnw=82&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwatts%2Briots%2B1965%26ndsp%3D18%26svnu m%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26rls%3DGGLJ,GGLJ:2006- 44,GGLJ:en-GB%26sa%3DN http://www.tcnj.edu/~blohm3/rubble.jpg

TASK: Causes & Consequences Event Causes Consequences Watts Riots 1965 His brother and mother was brought into the scene Traffic stops weren’t common in that part of town The 3 accused were arrested People rioted because the police officer arrested them The man stopped was intoxicated 99% black – 1% Jewish Man was stopped for erratic driving Troops were sent from around USA Lasted for 6 days in 1965 4,000 people arrested Riots Began Property damage $35,000,000 34 people killed (28 black) People injured, and killed

TASK: Copy-&-Paste the causes from the previous into the two groups below; Long-Term Causes Short-Term Causes TIME His brother and mother was brought into the scene Traffic stops weren’t common in that part of town The 3 accused were arrested People rioted because the police officer arrested them The man stopped was intoxicated 99% black – 1% Jewish Man was stopped for erratic driving They didn’t have enough facilities to keep them out of trouble

TASK: Which are more important; short- term or long-term causes? Explain why. Answer… We think short term causes because if the short term cause didn’t happen, then the rioting would not have happened. But because of the facts it shows as a long term cause that 99% were black – they didn’t care about them to keep them out of trouble, so that has happened before the short term cause, but if they didn’t have the short term cause, they would not have had the chance to riot.
