1 5 Ways To Stop A Bully November/December Counseling Lesson 4 th Grade

2 Reminder of Counseling Class Expectations 1.Sit up on the steps of the amphitheater with your feet on the step in front of you. 2.Listen, without talking, when the teacher or another student is talking. 3.Raise your hand if you would like to speak. 4.When working in groups, stay on task and work only with your assigned group. 5.Follow all directions throughout the lesson.

3 Learning Targets I can explain at least 5 behaviors of a bully other than physical aggression (hitting, kicking, pushing, etc.). I can list at least 3 ways I can stop a bully. I can describe appropriate ways of handling various bully situations.

4 What Is A Bully? Our last lesson on bullying was called “Are You A Bully?” Talk to the people in your group about what makes a bully a bully.

5 A person using bullying behavior is someone who hurts someone else by intentionally pushing or hitting.

6 A person using bullying behavior is someone who threatens you with a fist in your face.

7 A person using bullying behavior is someone who teases with mean words.

8 A person using bullying behavior is also someone who joins in the laughing when someone else teases.

9 A person using bullying behavior is also someone who makes a point not to let you sit with them at lunch.

10 A person using bullying behavior is also someone who excludes others from their group or activity.

11 A person using bullying behavior is also someone who hurts your feelings on purpose by rolling their eyes at you.

12 A person using bullying behavior is someone who uses their popularity to boss others around, telling others what they should or shouldn’t do.

13 A person using bullying behavior is someone who tries to control their friend and not let them spend time with others.

14 A person using bullying behavior is someone who spreads bad rumors about others.

15 A person using bullying behavior is someone who gossips or repeats bad rumors about others.

16 Let’s look at the list of bully behaviors. It’s NOT okay to… Push Hit Hurt Others Threaten Intimidate Others It’s also NOT okay to… Tease in a hurtful way Join in laughing when someone is making fun of someone else Exclude others from the group or activities Roll our eyes intending to hurt others Boss our friends around Spread rumors about others

17 What Is Bullying? Bullying is a pattern of repeated behavior that is meant to hurt someone (physically, emotionally, or socially) and usually has an imbalance of power (physical or social).

18 How Can You Stop A Bully? Talk to your group about how you can stop someone that is bullying you. Let’s watch a video called “Five Ways to Stop a Bully”. As we watch, think about some strategies you can try.

20 5 Ways to Stop A Bully 1.Tell the Bully to Stop 2.Pretend the Bully Doesn’t Bother You 3.Stand Up Together 4.Ignore and Walk Away 5.Tell an Adult* *Go to an adult right away if someone is physically hurting you, threatening to hurt you, or has or talks about a weapon.

21 What Would You Do? Activity Take a clipboard, pencil, and a handout from your group’s basket. Work with your group to complete “Be Cool” and “Paired Up”. When you are finished, complete the questions at the bottom independently.

22 Learning Targets Can you explain 5 behaviors of a bully? Can you list at least 3 out of 5 ways you can stop a bully? Did you complete your handout and describe appropriate ways of handling various bully situations?
