OBJECTIVES To help the student identify the basic order of the planets and list their names. To learn the basic terms that affect a planet’s movement. The student can identify different facts about the solar system and understand the basic facts that make up each planet. 4 DIRECTIONS You are going to be flying off to each planet in the solar system! As you travel, you will have to click on the planet at the bottom that you wish to fly to!solar system There will also be different links at each planet that you can click on to learn more about the planet and maybe even play a game or watch a video! Before you fly to a new planet, make sure you have clicked through everything at your current planet!!! There may be more than one thing to see at each stop! 5 THE SUN The planets orbit around the sun.orbit The sun is one of many different stars in the sky and only looks like the biggest because we are closer to it than other stars.stars The sun gives us life on Earth – it keeps us warm and helps things grow! 2,715,395 miles around!!!! Over one million times bigger than the Earth! Made up of many different gases!! SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E DIRECTION S STANDARD VOCA B THE DWAR FS Review ! 6 MERCURY The planet that is closest to the sun. It orbits around the sun in only 88 days!!! It rotates very slowly on its axis and takes 59 days to go from day to night.rotates The craters on Mercury were made by meteorites hitting the planet millions of years ago! Temperatures range from 750 degrees to -328 degrees! SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E DIRECTION S STANDARD VOCA B THE DWAR FS Review ! OBJECTIV ES

VENUS SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E DIRECTION S STANDARD VOCA B THE DWAR FS Review ! A picture taken by NASA! Click to find out more!  The second planet in the solar system!!  The closest planet to the Earth and just barely smaller in size.  The hottest planet in the solar system!! The layer of gas around it, holds all the heat in!!  Orbits around the sun in 262 days! OBJECTIV ES

EARTH SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E DIRECTION S STANDARD VOCA B THE DWAR FS Review !  The planet that we live on!!!  The third planet from the sun!!  Has one moon that revolves around it!revolves  The Earth is not a complete sphere.  There is more water than land!  Takes 365 days to orbit the sun. OBJECTIV ES

MARS SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E DIRECTION S STANDARD VOCA B THE DWAR FS Review ! Click here to learn about the Mars Rover!!  The fourth planet! The “Red Planet”. Instead of being blue and green like Earth, it has a red tint! However, is similar to Earth!  Temperatures range from -125 degrees to 23 degrees  Many mountains and craters!  The “Red Planet”. Instead of being blue and green like Earth, it has a red tint! 10 JUPITER SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E DIRECTION S STANDARD VOCA B THE DWAR FS Review ! Click on Jupiter for more pictures!! The 5 th and biggest planet in the solar system!!! Rotates very fast!! Spins completely around in 9.84 hours! A “gas giant” – Completely composed of gas! Has 64 moons – 4 of which are large enough to see with a small telescope! The Red Spot – a whirlpool of storms visible on the planet! OBJECTIV ES

SATURN SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E DIRECTION S STANDARD VOCA B THE DWAR FS Review ! Click here to explore the planets some more! Click for video!  The 6 th planet and the second largest in the solar system!!!  There are at least 18 moons around Saturn.  Another gas giant!  Has 3 main rings (made up mainly of ice)  It takes 29½ years to orbit the sun.  Rotates in only 10 hours! OBJECTIV ES

URANUS SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E DIRECTION S STANDARD VOCA B THE DWAR FS Review ! Click for a fun game!!  The 7 th planet – the first to be discovered by telescope.  Spins around completely on its side! Most likely because a collision occurred in its early years.  The 3 rd gas giant. Contains mostly hydrogen.  It has 27 moons!!  There are nine, very faint, rings around the planet. OBJECTIV ES

NEPTUNE SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E DIRECTION S STANDARD VOCA B THE DWAR FS Review ! Click to create your own solar system!!  The 8 th planet and the third largest in the solar system.  Takes 165 days to orbit the sun!  Has the most violent weather than any other planet in the solar system. It is the windiest planet.  Covered in thin white clouds.  There are 13 total moons around the planet.  A Gas Giant –It is composed only of 2 gases: hydrogen and helium. OBJECTIV ES

THE DWARF PLANETS SU N MERCUR Y VEN US EART H MAR S JUPITE R SATUR N URANU S NEPTUN E STANDARD VOCA B DIRECTION S THE DWAR FS Mercury There are 5 dwarf planets. Pluto used to be a planet but was changed and labeled a dwarf planet in 2006. These planets are not quite as small as a comet or a asteroid, but they are not as big as a planet. Click here to learn more about each dwarf planet!!!! Review ! OBJECTIV ES

VOCABULARY Solar System – The system of planets and other objects that orbit the sun. Orbit – The path an object takes around another. Revolve – When something is moving in a circle around another object. Rotate – When an object spins it is said to be rotating. Star – A self-luminous object that shines because of the release of energy that is made by nuclear reactions that happen at its core/center.
