EXPRESSION OF VALUES  Teaching is intimately related to values  Not suggested that you turn your classroom into a forum for debate  You are looked to for opinion  Make sure that the opinions you share are ones you don’t mind your students being subjected to  Make sure that, by expressing your values, you are not demonizing or putting down other values  Tell your students where you are and how you got there

SELF EXPRESSION  Openness  A teacher who presents themself in an open and honest manner is more likely to forge relationships and gain the trust of their students  On the other hand, students need to be accorded respect and dignity when they disagree with the way that we present ourselves. We should be open to other ways of life and different perspectives.

Appropriate use of humor Humor can be a helpful way to diffuse anxiety and forge relationships, but when used inappropriately can do quite the opposite. Honoring difference Even within the same family, students possess different strengths and weaknesses that they may be self conscious about. Creating an environment where a student feels challenged Many students welcome a challenge and would be motivated by healthy competition.

AFFECTION Developing relationships Many students report that they perform better in a classroom setting where they feel they have a relationship with the teacher Mixed messages Adolescents are often unsure of what a gesture means or how to interpret it; be aware of the messages you are sending. Reputation In a school setting, rumors spread very quickly. A misinterpreted message can ruin a reputation and even a career.

PERSONAL LIFE Modeling appropriate behavior Setting a healthy example for how to deal with life’s difficulties is a positive teacher behavior Taking time out of class to discuss personal problems, especially those that may make students uncomfortable, is not an appropriate behavior.

PERSONAL APPEARANCE As a professional, how you present yourself is very important. As a role model, how you present yourself is arguable more important. Parents will be judging your abilities based on your appearance. It is important to model individuality and confidence.
