8 REASONS WHY CITIES GREW AND DEVELOPED Second Industrial Revolution – a period of rapid growth in US manufacturing in the late 1800s Specialized industries, including steel (Pittsburgh, PA) and meat packing (Chicago, IL)

9 REASONS WHY CITIES GREW AND DEVELOPED Immigration to America from other countries Movement of Americans from rural(farm) to urban(city) areas for job opportunities

10 PROBLEMS OF RAPID GROWTH Rapid industrialization and urbanization led to overcrowded immigrant neighborhoods and tenements. Tenement – Apartments for immigrants
