Surf Surf, Swim or Stay Home: Using Real Time Data to make Predictions and Comparisons E.Eubanks

Take to the Beach Ideas -review knowledge of waves -introduce components of water waves and how they apply to surfing -introduce real time data where to find it, how to use it -view ocean data collection instrumentation -use real time data and make predictions and comparisons

Waves Electromagnetic Radio, Light, Xray, ++ http://science.hq.nasa.gov/kids/imagers/ems/waves3.html Seismic Waves Hand wave Football stadium wave Water wave

All Waves Share same basic components http://www.onr.navy.mil/focus/ocean/motion/waves1.htm REFRESHER Period- How long it takes For the wave to go from Crest to crest Surfers LOVE long wave periods- The longerrrrrrrrrrr- the better

http://adventure.howstuffworks.com/outdoor-activities/water-sports/surfing6.htm

Surfing is …. The sport or pastime of being carried to the shore on the crest of large waves while standing or lying on a surfboard. Ready to go???

Student generated video- the story- Ready to go surfing - walking out of door with Gear.. Stopped by a “surf tracker” person… Leads them to computer and REAL TIME DATA

Real time Data -information that is delivered immediately after collection... like NOW.. Now.. Now.. Now… Right NOW http://www.ioos.gov/ioos_in_action/welcome.html HFR Wave rider Mooring/buoy

Surfers generally want to know -height of the wave - 2-3 ft or larger is fun -period of the wave the longer the period the longer you ride (5 s good) -direction of the wave- ie - depends on the break- Lake Worth, Fl - only E/NE because Bahama’s blocks everything else -Is the wave from a ground swell or surface wind? look for a significant weather pattern over water- -If winds are on shore or off- (direction)…. off shore (good or no wind with a ground swell is good) on shore - choppy and rip currents

Secoora - Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association, is the regional solution to integrating coastal and ocean observing data and information in the Southeast United States http://secoora.org/about

High Frequency Radar - Surface Currents http://cordc.ucsd.edu/projects/mapping/maps/ Coastal Observing Research and Development Center

http://oos.soest.hawaii.edu/pacioos/ PacIOOS is one of eleven regional observing programs in the U.S. that are supporting the emergence of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS®) under the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP). Various Regions have sites that have similar content

What’s a Surf Forecaster? Who is a Surf Forecaster? and YOU! Sean Collins Someone who uses offshore swell data to predict onshore wave conditions. http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/sean-collins-1952-2011_64380/
