5   Why does Shakespeare include monologues and soliloquies?  Monologue = talking by myself with others listening  Soliloquy = talking to myself when I’m alone  What does the audience learn when the characters share these private moments?  How does this add to the drama and suspense? Taking to Myself

6   Subtext: underlying or implied meaning in dialogue or the implied relationship between characters  It is never directly stated  Think about what Juliet says when she talks with Paris  As Juliet becomes more alienated from her family and friends, she relies more on the audience understanding her subtext Subtext
