DO NOW MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 True or False: Metamorphic rocks form from heat and pressure. It’s a new week! Make a new Do Now page in your notebook.

Agenda  Lab Introduction  Lab  Analysis and Conclusion

Lab Introduction  Today we will look at and identify samples of rocks WHY?? So we know what rocks are around us and so we can work toward earning 85% on our Science A.C.T.

Pre-Lab Questions  On your own, answer pre-lab questions 1-3  You may use your notes  During this time, no talking

Question  Does the type of rock affect the appearance of the rock? Hypothesis  Format: If ______________________, then ______________ because ____________.

Question  Does the type of rock affect the appearance of the rock? Hypothesis  Format: If ______________________, then ______________ because ____________. At this time, write a hypothesis. You have 1 minute. At this time, write a hypothesis. You have 1 minute.

Procedures  On your own, read procedures 1-4 Any questions?

Rotating through lab  Watch my example  Pencils down, eyes up front

Partners  You have 20 seconds to find ONE lab partner and sit together at ONE lab bench  Chose to be either CHIPS or SALSA (3 seconds)  CHIPS = question master (can ask questions)  SALSA = rotation master (makes sure your group rotates correctly)

Lab Rotation  You will have 1:00 minute at each station  Work quickly and efficiently!  Rotate when you hear MUSIC

Check for Understanding Show Thumbs Up for True, Thumbs Down for False 1. In this lab we are trying to identify the type of rock 2. You will work on your down during lab 3. If you have a question, anyone can ask 4. You will rotate when you hear the music 5. You have 1:30 at each station so you can take your time

Lab Rotation  You will have 1:00 minute at each station  Work quickly and efficiently!  Rotate when you hear MUSIC Let’s get started!

Clean up – 1 minute  Tallest person in group: bring rocks from your last station to the front of the room  Make sure each plastic cup has 2 samples of the rock  Return to your seats

Types of Rock  Igneous  51 - Basalt  52 – Pumice  54 – Obsidian  55 – Tuff  57 – Granite Sedimentary 70 – Sandstone 71 - Limestone 72 – Travertine 76 – Silicified Wood 77 – Coal Metamorphic 61 – Schist 62 – Marbles 64 – Gneiss

DO NOW WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2011 True or False: Sediments are small rocks, minerals, sand or dirt that are pressed together in sedimentary rocks.

Agenda  Rock Cycle  Practice labeling Rock Cycle  Quick Questions  Rock Star Book

All Rocks are RELATED  An egg is related to a chicken…  … just like rocks are related to each other.

In science, we call this relationship the ROCK CYCLE  Definition: The ROCK CYCLE is the process where the 3 types of rocks can change and become new rock We will learn to draw the rock cycle!

Notes on the Rock Cycle  Turn to the next blank page in your notebook  Title it “Rock Cycle”  Add today’s date: 9/21/11

Labeling the Rock Cycle…  First, watch my example  Now, you work with your partner to fill in the blanks on the Rock Cycle Picture  You have 4 minutes – go!

Quick Questions 1. What processes does metamorphic rock go through to become igneous rock? a. weathering and pressure b. melting and cooling c. heat and pressure

Quick Questions 2. What process does igneous rock go through to become sedimentary rock? a. weathering and pressure b. melting and cooling c. heat and pressure

Quick Questions 3. What processes do both igneous rock and sedimentary rock go through to become metamorphic rock? a. weathering and erosion b. melting and cooling c. heat and pressure

Rock Star Book  On your own, you will create a page in your Rock Star Book describing the entire Rock Cycle  Include:  Pictures  Labeled arrows  Descriptions Look at my example

DO NOW THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2011 True or False: Metamorphic rocks melt and then cool to become igneous rocks.

Agenda  Introduction to Lab  Start Lab

Behavior Expectations in Lab  Follow all directions the first time they are given  Focus on the lab and the procedures  Use 12 inch voices and speak only with your lab partner

Behavior Expectations in Lab I reserve the right to remove a student at any time from lab if he or she is not following directions, not working on the lab, or is distracting another student in any way.

Rock Cycle Lab  Background – follow along as I read  Pre-Lab Background Research questions  Work with your partner to answer these questions  You have 5 minutes and you may use your notes

Rock Cycle Lab  Question: Does the heating and cooling of a material affect its appearance?  Hypothesis  Work with your partner to write a prediction about what you think will happen  You have 3 minutes and you may use your notes

Rock Cycle Lab  PROCEDURES – read through all 18 procedures  Any questions?  Watch as I model how to complete the steps in this lab and pay attention to where materials are

Rock Cycle Lab  Remember, you must ANSWER all questions before moving on to the next step  As soon as you are done with a step, move on to the next step

Rock Cycle Lab Jobs  Someone chose to be PEANUT BUTTER, someone chose to be JELLY, someone chose to be BREAD  Peanut Butter: Materials manager  Jelly: Flame worker  Bread: Procedures master  Write down your job! (up by the date and name)

Rock Cycle Lab  Get started!

Rock Cycle Lab  Clean Up  Material manager: put away all materials  EVERYONE: help clean up your area Return to your seats

DO NOW FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2011 True or False: Metamorphic rocks turn into sedimentary rocks by heat and pressure.

Agenda  Finish Lab  Analysis and Conclusion

Behavior Expectations in Lab  Follow all directions the first time they are given  Focus on the lab and the procedures  Use 12 inch voices and speak only with your lab partner

Behavior Expectations in Lab I reserve the right to remove a student at any time from lab if he or she is not following directions, not working on the lab, or is distracting another student in any way.

Rock Cycle Lab  Remember, you must ANSWER all questions before moving on to the next step  As soon as you are done with a step, move on to the next step

Rock Cycle Lab  REMEMBER:  Peanut Butter: Materials manager  Jelly: Procedures master  Bread: Question asker

Rock Cycle Lab  Get started! As soon as you finish the lab, fill in the diagram and start the conclusion.

Rock Cycle Lab  Clean Up  Material manager: put away all materials  EVERYONE: help clean up your area Return to your seats
