HS2 Objective ‘The aim of the HS2 project is to deliver hugely enhanced capacity and connectivity between our major conurbations’ Andrew McNaughton, HS2 Ltd Technical Director – evidence to HS2 Select Committee, 30/11/2015

HS2 Objective ‘Vastly enhanced Connectivity’??

HS2 Zone of Influence 20 cities plus Heathrow 210 possible journeys Not possible with stand-alone HS2 Network required comprising HS2 and existing routes

HS2 Remit 1Build a London to West Midlands high speed line 2 Consider development of network further north 3 Select a London terminal 4 Consider an intermediate parkway station between London and W Midlands 5 Build an interchange with GWR/Heathrow/ CrossRail services 6 Connect to HS1 and the existing network

Assessment of Connectivity 25 million population

HS2 : Journeys improved 43 links improved

HS2 : Journeys improved 43 links improved HS2 : 21% network efficiency

43 links improved 48 links made worse HS2 : Journeys made worse

HSUK : Network Enhanced 208 links improved None made worse

HSUK : Network Enhanced 208 links improved None made worse HSUK : 100% network efficiency

HS2 Objective ‘Vastly enhanced Capacity’??

HS2 : Inadequate Capacity 2-track spine via Chilterns Segregated from existing network Only serves primary cities Bypasses most second tier cities No capacity for Heathrow services No capacity gains in key cities

HSUK : Delivering Capacity 4-track spine via M1 corridor – following national ‘Route 1’ Fully integrated with existing network Serves all primary & second-tier cities Extra capacity for Heathrow services Major capacity gains in all key cities

HSUK Achievement HSUK provides the ‘Vastly enhanced Connectivity & Capacity’ promised by HS2 Ltd

High Speed UK More than just a line on a map Detailed route design of more than 1,000km of new and upgraded railway. Detailed cost comparisons with HS2 showing ~£20 billion cost savings. Timetable developed showing average 45% journey time reductions. City centre stations in all major cities. Regional integration strategies for all areas served by HS2/HSUK.

1:25,000 Mapping Detail Example of HSUK 1 to 25,000 mapping showing junction 9 on the M1. HSUK is shown in green. 41 and 42 are kilometre markers measured from Euston. The ‘dumbbell’ markers show the point at which a straight changes to a transition and then into a curve etc.

The Environment M1 HSUK HS2 No tunnels shown M1 J11 J10 HS2 No tunnels shown The Pursuit of Speed Euston to Birmingham New Street – hub of the West Midlands rail network – is 59 mins. by HS2 which includes a stop at Old Oak Common and a 10 minute walk from Curzon Street. HSUK reaches Coventry in 38 mins., International in 46 mins. and New Street (for local services, in 55 mins. That is 4 minutes quicker than by HS2. J9 HSUK in a 4.1 km tunnel under Luton & Dunstable conurbation The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty CO 2 HS2 saves no CO 2 HSUK saves 600M tonnes of CO 2 over 40 years

1.Major CO 2 reductions estimated at 600Mt over 40 years. HS2 achieves no significant reductions 2.Links to local networks at city centre stations Most HS2 stations parkways or termini 3.Frequent connections to existing network HS2 disconnected from existing network 4.Direct links to Heathrow & other airports HS2 spur to Heathrow cancelled 5.Direct link to HS1 HS2-HS1 link cancelled HSUK Key Benefits

High Speed 2 & 3 : Northern Powerhouse or Po0rhouse?

High Speed UK : Energising the Northern Powerhouse

HSUK meets all Northern Powerhouse requirements: All targets beaten for intercity journey times; Direct links between city centre stations; Direct links to Manchester Airport; New trans-Pennine route with capacity for high speed passenger traffic and freight; Transpennine lorry shuttle to mitigate congestion on A628(T) Woodhead Road. High Speed UK : Energising the Northern Powerhouse

We were going to go for a proper press launch as soon as we could in 2016, and petition Parliament; That is a potentially high risk strategy; a)If you get 1,000,000+ signatures all well and good b)If you can only muster 100 – Disaster! But then a trumpet sounded and a sponsor rode over the hill; Our sponsor has placed a 6 figure contract with a PR company to promote the HSUK scheme; HSUK – Next Steps - 1

HSUK – Next Steps - 2 Our existing web site had been visited by over 56,000 people We have a new improved web site arriving soon We have started filming a video; Our agents will be arranging a major press launch shortly after the new web site goes live; The battle is about to begin; The battle will be fought on social media; The battle will be fought with a direct challenge to HS2 Ltd and the Government, to prove that their proposals are best for Britain.
