Church Interaction with the World By: Natalia Loomis

Does the Catholic Church Contribute to humanity? Through out its history the Church has had many ups and downs in reaction to society. However, its outcome has led to many positive contributions to humanity and the world around it. The Catholic Church has contributed to the fields of education, art, and missions.

Through out Church History, the Church has been dedicated to many forms of education. The church has dedicated their time to teaching others, taking a part in science, and helping people become specialized in a certain field.

TEACHING OTHERS: o As interest in learning increased people flocked to the monastery for instruction. o Many monks and nuns became teachers in the Universities of Notre-dame, Sainte Genevieve, and the Universities of Paris and Bologna. o Students had the option to hire and fire teachers if necessary. SPECIALIZING IN CERTAIN FIELDS: o Students were able to choose what classes they wanted to get a degree in such as technology, law, art, medicine, or physics. o During the Renaissance, schools were organized into guilds. These guilds allowed different people to work as apprentices to be certified in different fields. o Knights were trained for battle while artisans made crafts and tools. PARTICIPATION IN SCIENCE: o Philosophy and science created the desire to understand the truths of human life. o During the Enlightenment the church disagreed with many philosophers such as Galileo, before accepting scientific theories. o As of today the Catholic Church is building the Vatican Observatory to encourage students to study Astronomy.

As a need for education grew, the Church was ready to lend a helping hand in teaching others, participating in science and specializing others in a certain field.

Through out Church history, the Church has been influenced by different styles of Art. These styles include, art during the Renaissance, art in the modern day churches, and art during the Enlightenment.

RENAISSANCE ART: o During the Renaissance, churches contained stained glass windows, statues, crosses, books, frescos, and pottery. o Many pictures and statues were depictions of Mary and Jesus or other saints. Religious relics were also hung. o Architecture included emphasis on symmetry, proportion, and geometry. Buildings contained domes, pilasters, columns, and niches. The ceilings were high to accompany the art on the walls. ENLIGTENMENT ART: o Art work during the Enlightenment began to combine earthly elements with celestial elements. o the most popular style during the Enlightenment was called rococo. Rococo was a light and simplistic style of art that was represented in every building. o Architecture included arches, columns, and many open areas. The buildings especially churches, included a detailed amount of chiseling, which was one focal points considering most of the decorations were very simplistic. ART IN THE MODERN CHURCH: o Catholic churches today include stain glass windows, statues of saints, and pictures of the Sages of the Cross. o Some Churches are ornate and decorated with gold and stone, such as the Lady of Lourdes in Waterbury. o The architecture consists of a mixture of Greek and Roman styles from the Renaissance, and Enlightenment eras.

Art in the Renaissance and the Enlightenment eras has influenced art and architecture in the church and everyday life since the beginnings of these movements.

At a certain point in Church history there was a beckoning call for missionary work. Many mission groups started to form and go into the new world to serve their purpose to the Catholic faith.

MISSIONS IN THE NEW WORLD: o Spanish missions evangelized people in India and the French missions evangelized people in North America. o English Catholics came to missions in the new world to escape religious persecution. o The Act of Toleration in Maryland was a safe haven for Catholics. MISSION GROUPS: o ST. Francis Xavier was one of the most important Jesuit groups who evangelized in India. o Juniperro Serra, a Franciscan priest, and his order founded the first mission in San Diego. o One modern day mission is the Mission of the Poor. They help build homes and supply food and non perishable goods to those in need. REASONS FOR MISSIONS: o Missions allowed missionaries to evangelize natives away from the distractions of outsiders. o Missionaries also conducted services for crew on the ships. o Missionaries were responsible for converting natives in order to gain more catholic followers.

In order to gain followers in the new world, the Catholic Church relied on the purpose missions to go out and evangelize to others.

The Catholic Church contributed to humanity through education, art, and missions. The Church’s role in these areas still continues today. Education, art, and missions help people learn, see, and react to their faith and others. What additional contributions has the Catholic Church made?
