Presentation on theme: "Species identification"— Presentation transcript:

1 Species identification
How to test meat and animal by-products to confirm they come from the animal stated on the label/documentation? Important for both food & feed industries

2 Food industry Undeclared meat in products and meat fraud when more expensive meat is mixed or replaced with cheaper one Horse-meat scandal in Europe in 2013 Treacability & testing are crucial to assure consumer safety and trust in food industry!

3 Protein characteristic for a target species
Testing methods Protein characteristic for a target species

4 ELISA testing solutions for raw and cooked meat speciation
ELISA Technologies manufactures a portfolio of species identification ELISA tests divided into kits for raw, cooked and rendered matrices. EuroProxima acts worldwide as distributor and provides customer support for these products.

5 ELISA-TEK raw meat Testing method based on antibodies to species specific serum albumin. Limit of detection: 1% for meat and poultry 1% for milk

6 ELISA-TEK cooked meat Testing method based on antibodies to species specific muscle-related glycoproteins. Limit of detection: <1% for meat and poultry

7 Feed industry Due to the outbreak of mad cow disease in the 80s and 90s the EU banned the use of most of the animal by-products in feed for farmed animals As animal by-products contain a lot of nutrients the EU has been carefully considering the relaxation of the ban

8 Processed animal proteins (PAPs)
Meat and dairy production High temperature and pressure By-products Ruminant processsed animal protein (ruminant PAP) High temperature and pressure Meat production Porcine processsed animal protein (porcine PAP) By-products High temperature and pressure Meat and egg production Poultry processsed animal protein (poultry PAP) By-products

9 Current regulation in the EU
Non ruminant PAPs are allowed in aquaculture feed, ruminant PAPs are not allowed PAPs intendent for aqua feed and aqua feed itself should not contain ruminant PAPs In general farmed ruminants and non ruminants cannot be fed with PAPs

10 MELISA-TEK meat species
Testing method based on antibodies to species specific troponin-I (muscle) protein. Limit of detection: 0.05% in muscle tissue 0.5% in meat and bone meals, feed (0.1% with high sensitivity extraction) MELISA-TEK Ruminant kit can be used to monitor the safety of the introduction of processed animal proteins in aqua feed. No risk of false positive if milk is present in a sample when using MELISA-TEK, in contrast to PCR method

11 End users for the meat speciation ELISAs
Food industry meat processors food industry using meat as an ingredient (ready meals, frozen meat products) food inspectors & control agencies Feed industry: PAPs producers feed producers Feed inspectors & control agencies
