3 Road Safety Section Road Safety Section is made up of 18 people who cover: Road Safety Education (RSE) School Crossing Patrols (14) (At present) Cycle training Education, Training & Publicity Accident Investigation Unit (AIU) Road Safety Engineering Safer Routes to School Safety Camera Engineering Safety Auditing

4 Our Targets There are a variety of targets we have been working towards… The national target is to reduce the number of Child KSIs by 50% KSIs by 40% Slight Injuries by 10% from the 1994-98 average by 2010 Stretch Target 20% on top of national LAA target 7% reduction in KSis

5 The Scale of the Problem “I am writing to you as the Road Safety Minister to highlight the importance the Coalition attaches to road safety, to recognise the importance of local action… Road casualties have huge economic and human costs. The Government is fully committed to working with local authorities to deliver further improvements in road safety” Mike Penning Road Safety Minister (June 2010) Around 1,240 people report being injured on Nottingham’s roads each year. The Government calculates that, on average, each casualty costs £52,600 This means just under £65.25million is lost each year from Nottingham

7 Serious Casualties Each month around 13 of these injuries are serious, costing an average of £189,200 each … £2.5million a month

8 Fatalities Most importantly around 6 people are killed each year. (£1.68million each)

13 AIU – Safer Routes to School Not casualty lead Provides improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists Implements ten 20mph limits around schools each year Links to Building Schools for the Future Works closely with the School Travel Planners and Road Safety Education Works closely with Sustrans and has been awarded several of the the Links to School grants (£300,000) Providing a new Toucan crossings and cycling facilities near Firbeck Primary, Hempshill Primary and Bulwell Academy Unsuccessful proposals for the Nottingham Academny and Bigwood School are also being implemented with Developer and LTP funds
