2 © Crown copyright 2010 2 Intervention… Intervention is any action planned to improve the progress of pupils who are at risk of not fulfilling their potential, whether that be pupils struggling to keep up or more able pupils who are not achieving what they are capable of. Effective intervention helps pupils make up shortfalls in their learning and accelerates their progress.

4 © Crown copyright 2010 How we offer intervention in Science at KS4 Wave 1 is about offering the pupils an inclusive and well-differentiated experience in everyday lessons, with plenty of support and opportunity to catch up with age-related expectations. Wave 2 is about offering groups of pupils short-term, extra help to accelerate the key points of learning. This enables smaller groups of pupils to cover what they have missed or address learning that is insecure. Wave 3 is about offering intensive, targeted support to individual pupils when small group interventions fail to work. This is where individual support is linked to very precise personal targets and timescales. 4

Students in line with target grade removed from intervention list, but continue to be closely monitored throughout the year Intervention students attend sessions covering topics that will be examined in June (see rota) Intervention students to attend coursework clinic to ensure best possible grade Breakfast club – drop in sessions to allow students to discuss weaknesses in understanding Holiday revision sessions – during Easter holidays 8

10 © Crown copyright 2010 How Can you Help your child Encourage your child to prepare a revision timetable and help them to stick to it Add exam dates to the family calendar Encourage students to carry out as many practice tests as possible. Help them to mark it Test them on key vocab linked with each unit Discuss science related topics at home – ask them their views and help them to formulate arguments for and against 10
