1 Fashion and Styles of the 1950’s

2 Influence and Drive 1950s fashion, like all fashion, reflected the events of its time. Two decades of deprivation and struggle were relieved by the threat of global nuclear war. Wartime restrictions and rations were removed . Teenagers with their generous pocket money and buying power was a driving force behind fashion in the 1950s.

3 1950s Women's Fashion After World War II, there was a huge push to get women back into the home and the kitchen: raising children and looking after the house. In magazines, television programs, books and other media, the housewife, or "homemaker," was lauded as the supreme goal

5 1950s Men's Fashion 1950s' fashion for men placed comfort much above trends, and most clothing for men from the 1950s was structured and easy to manage. There was a huge influence that Elvis Presley's style had on men's wear. Leather jackets became a huge rage, thanks to the King. Clothes were hugely influenced by Westerns and cowboy movies

8 Youthful Trends The Beaniks-rebels of fashion
Girls wore dresses everyday. Neither pants nor, heaven forbid, shorts were permitted. Moreover, the dress had to come to at least mid-knee and usually covered the whole knee.

9 Fabrics and Prints New materials in the 1950s
The 1950s saw the introduction of a new range of synthetic clothing materials like nylon, acrylic polyester and vinyl. These fabrics were especially appealing to women because they were easy to wash, dried quickly and did not crease or require ironing. The Hawaiian Shirt: There is little else that screams the word unfashionable" more than a cheap Hawaiian shirt.
