As a young and brilliant lawyer, Jefferson worked as a scribe and editor for the Continental Congress. In 1776 the Continental Congress decided to formally break relations with England. The Congress knew the result would be war with Britain. Jefferson was chosen to write their reasons. This is the end of information about his role in the Revolution. Jefferson was concerned about the United States being blocked from trade to the west by foreign nations controlling the Mississippi. He offered to buy New Orleans from Napoleon. Napoleon offered to sell all of what was then called Louisiana. Jefferson took the offer for $15 million. Next slideGo back to the beginning

Jefferson ordered the Corps of Discovery to learn about lands included in the Louisiana Purchase, but most importantly, they were to find out about the long-fabled Northwest Passage – a water route across North America. The Northwest Passage did not exist. Lewis and Clark created very accurate maps of the West. Some men in their expedition went on to guide others in the West.
