1 The Brain Parts & Functions

2 Cerebellum The part of the brain below the back of the cerebrum. It regulates balance, posture, movement, and muscle coordination.

3 Corpus Callosum A large bundle of nerve fibres that connect the left and right hemispheres. In a lateral section of the brain, it looks a bit like a ā€œCā€ on its side.

4 Cerebral Cortex Sometimes referred to as a thin layer surrounding the cerebrum. Often the cerebral cortex and the cerebrum are synonymous.

5 Frontal Lobe of the Cerebrum
The top, front regions of each of the cerebral hemispheres. They are used for reasoning, emotions, judgment, and voluntary movement.

6 Occipital Lobe of the Cerebrum
The region at the back of each cerebral hemisphere that contains the centres of vision and reading ability; located at the back of the head.

7 Parietal Lobe of the Cerebrum
The middle lobe of each of cerebral hemisphere between the frontal and occipital lobes; it contains important sensory centres; located at the upper read of the head.

8 Temporal Lobe of the Cerebrum
The region at the lower side of each cerebral hemisphere. It contains the centres of hearing and memory. Located at the sides of the head.

9 Limbic System The part of the brain that deals with emotion, memories, and stimulation. The thalamus, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and amygdala are all parts of the limbic system.

10 Thalamus Located in the middle of the brain between the cerebral cortex and the midbrain. It works to correlate several important processes including consciousness, sleep, and sensory interpretation. It is like a switchboard operator for the body.

11 Hypothalamus The region of the brain that secretes substances that influence pituitary gland function. It is involved in the control of body temperature, hunger, thirst, and the processes that regulate homeostasis.

12 Pituitary Gland A gland attached to the base of the brain that secretes hormones. Located between the Pons and the Corpus Callosum.

13 Pons The part of the brainstem that joins the hemispheres of the cerebellum and connects the cerebrum with the cerebellum. It is located above the medulla oblongata.

14 Medulla Oblongata The lowest section of the brainstem, located at the top of the spinal cord. It controls automatic functions including heartbeat, breathing, etc.

15 Mid Brain The part of the brain stem located below the cerebral cortex and above the hindbrain. Helps relay information for vision and hearing.
