广州市教育局教学研究室英语科 Scanning (1 minute) 1.Who is John Snow? 2.What is “King Cholera”? John Snow was a famous doctor in London. He used his knowledge and defeated cholera. John Snow (1813~1858) Cholera is a disease’s name. It was the deadly disease of its day because neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So the terrified people called it “King Cholera”.

广州市教育局教学研究室英语科 Name of illness cholera ( 霍乱 ) Symptom( 症状 )severe vomit ( 呕吐 ) and diarrhea ( 腹泻 ) AftereffectDie quickly from a loss of liquid Background knowledge

广州市教育局教学研究室英语科 John Snow began to test two theories. An outbreak of cholera hit London in 1854. John Snow marked the deaths on a map. He announced that the water carried the virus. John Snow investigated two streets where the outbreak was very severe. King Cholera was defeated. He found that most of the deaths were near a water pump. He had the handle removed from the water pump. Skimming (2 minutes) Give a correct order. (Ex. 1 on P3) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

广州市教育局教学研究室英语科 Scanning (2 minutes) Two theories In 1854 500, 10 16, 37, 38 and 40 20,21; 8,9 7 The first suggested that…multiplied in the air. The second suggested…absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. Another outbreak hit London. More than 500people had died in 10 days. These numbers in Broad Street near the water pump had many of the deaths. 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street had no deaths ….They didn ’ t drink the water from the Broad Street pump. These families worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They didn ’ t drink the water from the pump. Finish the chart.

广州市教育局教学研究室英语科 Careful Reading (3 minutes) T or F: As a doctor, being able to attend Queen Victoria was an honorable thing at that time. Although cholera couldn’t be cured, its cause was known to people in the days of John Snow. John Snow doubted the two theories explaining how cholera killed people, so he did investigation ( 调查 ) to test them. The results wouldn’t have been so clear without the map John Snow had drawn. The polluted dirty water from the river was to blame for ( 是 ······ 的原因 ) the disease. T F F T T

广州市教育局教学研究室英语科 Do you know how to prove a new idea in scientific research? Draw a conclusion Think of a method Collect results Make up a question Find a problem Analyze the results Repeat if necessary Careful reading (5 minutes)

广州市教育局教学研究室英语科 Find a problem Make up a question Think of a method Collect results Analyze the results Find supporting evidence Draw a conclusion What causes cholera? Which theory is correct? Gather information in anther outbreak. Mark information on a map to find out where people died or didn ’ t die. Look into the water to see if that is the cause of the illness. Find other evidence to confirm the conclusion. The water is to blame. The source of all the water supplied should be examined.

广州市教育局教学研究室英语科 Summarizing John Snow wanted to find the ______ of cholera. He _________ that people became ill after eating _______ food. When another ________ hit London, he ________ the information of the dead in a small area. Then he __________ the source of water there. After finding extra _________ from two other deaths, John Snow _________ that ________ water carried the virus. He showed that cholera could be _________ if people drank clean water. cause suspected infectedoutbreak gathered looked into evidence announcedpolluted defeated

广州市教育局教学研究室英语科 Read the passage John Snow Defeats “King Cholera” aloud fluently, and recite the first two paragraphs.
