Taking In & Storing Information Baylis 10.1

Memory Memory: The storage & retrieval of what has been learned or experienced ENCODING STORAGE RETRIEVAL

Memory: Encoding Encoding: the transforming of info so that the nervous system can process it You use your senses to encode & establish a memory

Memory: Types of Encoding Acoustic Codes Memorizing by hearing it repeatedly Visual Codes Memorizing by visualizing it Semantic Codes Memorizing by organizing/making sense of it

Memory Storage: the process by which info is maintained over time How much stored depends on effort put into encoding & importance of info Can be stored: - for long time (long-term) - for a few sec (short-term) - for a fraction of a sec (sensory) ENCODING STORAGE

3Stages of Memory 1.Sensory Memory – senses of sight & hearing can hold an input for a fraction of a second Visual – Iconic Memory Auditory – Echoic Memory Purpose: prevents you from being overwhelmed, allows for decision making, & allows for stability

3 Stages of Memory 2. Short-Term Memory a.k.a: “working memory” Brief: about 20-30 seconds or less Holds about 7 unrelated items

More on Short Term Memory Maintenance Rehearsal System for remembering that involves repeating info Chunking Grouping items to make them easier to remember EX: Phone Numbers

More on Short Term Memory Primacy-Recency Effect: The fact that we can remember things at the beginning & end of list

3 Stages of Memory: #3 Long Term Memory The storage of information over extended period of time Stored according to categories Capacity: Limitless

Memory: Retrieval Retrieval: The process of obtaining information that has been stored in memory REMEMBERING! ENCODING STORAGE RETRIEVAL

3 Stages of Memory: Long Term Memory Long-Term Memory Procedural Memory Declarative Memory Semantic Memory Episodic Memory
