Energy Energy is the ability to make things move or change. ◦ Energy is needed to get things done ◦ Energy has many different forms

Forms o energy Thermal energy Mechanical energy Electrical energy Chemical energy Electromagnetic energy Nuclear energy

Thermal energy Thermal energy- energy of moving particles ◦ Matter is made of atoms and molecules that are constantly moving

Question How does the amount of energy in a cup of hot coffee compare to that of a glass of ice cold lemonade?

Mechanical energy Mechanical energy- energy of moving objects ◦ Example: car moving down the street

Electrical energy Electrical energy is the energy of moving electric charges ◦ Electrical energy moving through wire  Examples: Computers, lamps

Chemical energy Chemical energy is energy stored in the bonds that hold atoms together (chemical bonds) ◦ Energy is released when those bonds are broken during a chemical reaction  Examples: food, fuels and batteries store chemical energy

Electromagnetic energy Electromagnetic energy- energy that travels as waves, through matter or empty space ◦ energy from the sun is electromagnetic energy ◦ You can see this energy as light or feel it as heat  Example: Microwaves

Nuclear energy Nuclear energy is stored in the nucleus of an atom ◦ Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus and are held together by nuclear forces ◦ Energy is released when these forces are overcome and particles are removed or added
