Keeping Safe Online Tracking your digital footprint

What advice would you give… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o8auwnJtqE As a class watch this YouTube video. You should make notes on advice you would want to give through a discussion in your small groups. Feedback to the class.

What advice would you give? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffnQnqC2QKU Watch the second YouTube video and make notes on advice you would give in this situation within your small groups. Feedback to the whole class with your ideas and discuss.

What would you do, might do or never do? Colour code:  Things you would do  Things you might do  Things you would never do Would you do it? Why/why not? What might be the consequences? On the first work sheet in small groups you should read the thought bubbles and colour code the thought bubbles with what you would do, might do or never do when online. Allow 8/10 minutes for this task, then discuss ideas/answers throughout the group.

Create your own footprint… In your small groups take a footprint. Write an acrostic linking the letters of ‘be safe online’ to internet safety. Make these as colourful and creative as possible for a display in reception. Write your names and tutor group on them to be entered into the competition. The 2 winning groups will receive a prize.

When online… We might become curious which could lead to seeking or befriending ‘adults’ who encourage you to adopt ideas or beliefs about particular issues/actions which might be somewhat extreme. We may be exposed to new influences and potentially risky behaviours, influence from peers, influence from older people or the internet as we begin to explore ideas and issues around our identity.

How does this picture relate to being safe online?

Three school girls travel to Syria… Three east London schoolgirls flown to Turkey and crossed the Syrian border to join the Islamic State terrorist group. The numbers of girls and young women who have or are intending to travel to the part of Syria that is controlled by the terrorist group calling themselves Islamic State has increased dramatically.

in 10 1 in 10 increase in Google searches related to ‘radicalisation’ between Dec 14 and Jan 15 38%

… Last year, twin teenage sisters, Zahra and Salma Halane, disappeared from their home in Manchester and flew to Istanbul, bound for Syria. The girls, who were just 16 at the time followed their older brother who is believed to be a jihadist fighter in the region. The pair, who had dreamed of pursuing medical careers, later became jihadi brides.

How did the internet play a part in this?

Extremism and Radicalisation… Extremism ▫The holding of extreme political or religious views Radicalisation ▫is a process by which an individual or group comes to adopt increasingly extreme political, social, or religious ideals and aspirations that (1) reject or undermine the status quo or (2) reject and/or undermine contemporary ideas and expressions of freedom of choice.

What type of people become radicalised?

Different types of radicalisation

White Supremacy Radicalisation… White supremacy is a form of racism centered upon the belief, and promotion of the belief, that white people are superior in certain characteristics, traits, and attributes to people of other racial backgrounds

Radicalisation… White supremacist groups are particularly active online. An individual may become increasingly secretive about the webpages they are visiting and what they are downloading whilst feeding their curiosity. Dylann Roof – an active online white supremacist.

… How would you spot people who are showing signs of radicalisation? When would you report it? Who to? Should you have an internet filter on your search bar? Why? How would you go about this? Discuss in your small groups and feedback to the class.

What does this mean for you? Social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, can be used by extremists looking to identify, target and contact young people. Often you might be asked to continue discussions, not via the mainstream social media, but via platforms, such as Kik Messenger.

How can we combat radicalisation on social media? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6_hyFQUN Lo Your task… As a school we are going to try and combat radicalisation on social media. In your small groups design a Facebook account/twitter account using the ideas shown in the YouTube video.
