1 What is Commonwealth The Commonwealth is an organization made up of 53 countries from all over the world. It was created from countries that were a part of the British Empire or had strong links with Britain. The Commonwealth promotes international understanding and world peace. The full name for the Commonwealth is the Commonwealth of Nations, and it was previously known as the British Commonwealth. 2 What does the Commonwealth do When elections take place in member countries, the Commonwealth sometimes monitors them to make sure they are fair. It is also involved in projects to save the environment, to tackle health crises in underprivileged countries and programmes to help young people, among other issues. The Commonwealth Games are held every four years and bring together athletes from all the Commonwealth countries to compete in athletics, swimming, cycling, hockey and lots of other sports. The Commonwealth Secretariat (the organization’s headquarters) is in London. The heads of the Commonwealth countries’ governments meet every two years to discuss the rules and values of the Commonwealth. The meetings are called Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGMs) and they take place in a different member country each time. Every member country has a representative at the CHOGMs. A Declaration of Commonwealth Principles was created at the CHOGM held in Singapore in 1971.
