How Do We Solve These Problems? Advanced Sciences and Engineering Performing Research Understanding Material on “Another” Level Exposing Ourselves to “New” Ideas and Practices Doing “Things” That Have Not Been Done Before

Solution…Nanotechnology ! What is it? What do you know about it? Broad term, referring to the manipulation of matter at the atomic level. Encompasses many scientific disciplines. Impacts daily life and our future greatly. http://www.tzhealth.com

Which Brings Us To The Inevitable Question… How “Big” Is It? –‘Nano’ means one-billionth (or 1 x 10 -9 ) –Refer to time, volume, mass, length, etc. –Think about the following; http://nanoscience.massey.ac.nz/images/nanoscale.gif

So, How Does Nanotechnology Make It Happen? Material properties change! –Example: Au Why is this important? –New and exciting products can be created! Size

The NMT Capstone Semester NMT is an acronym for the following; Nanofabrication Manufacturing Technology What Does It Mean? –Training on Advanced Instrumentation More than $42 million in equipment –150+ hours of instruction in two cleanrooms –Be able to build “anything” on the atomic level

The NMT Capstone Semester Open to all students across Pennsylvania –6 courses,18 credits at Penn State University – University Park, offered during all three semesters (fall, spring, summer). –Work towards a certification, minor, and/or major at institutions across the state. –When and if available, a State grant covers room and board while in the program, with every student eligible! Must be a US citizen and PA resident.

The NMT Capstone Semester A word about cost… Capstone Semester tuition fees are identical to the credit/course fee schedule of your home institution Apply for financial assistance through the financial aid office of your home college or university, if needed If already employed, you may be eligible for full or partial tuition reimbursement from your employer

The NMT Capstone Semester What Do You Need? –College level coursework/experience in the following; Chemistry Physics Algebra and Trigonometry Writing/Communication –A Recommendation from Professor at Your Institution What Is Helpful? –Coursework/Experience in; Electronics/Engineering Biology/Biotechnology

The NMT Capstone Semester What Will You Do? –Group based approach You and 3 to 4 other students for the entire semester –Lecture Three hours either 4 or 5 days a week –Laboratory Three hours either 4 or 5 days a week, generally –Projects Two to Three during the semester

The NMT Capstone Semester More About Projects… Nanoparticle Growth –Nisarg Patel (MCCC) –Mike Blaze (PSU Fayette) –Nikhil Patel (PSU) –Anthony Lucas (RACC) –Justin Becker (Northampton) Nanowire Growth –Katy Feather (PA Highlands) –Rebecca Albert (PCT) –Viral Patel (MCCC) –Rich Fowler (Northampton)

Testing & Research Xactix Currently, 76 PA employers have hired NMT Graduates! Companies Who Have Hired NMT Graduates

And Why Have They Hired NMT Graduates? Pittsburgh-based Company “Program graduates make outstanding employees when they come to work for us, from day one. “When we get them, we feel like we’re stealing from the competitor.” Lehigh Valley-based Company “When we need to hire, we look for students from the NMT program first. These students are our preference.”

And Why Have They Hired NMT Graduates? Harrisburg-based Company “The NMT program graduates are by far, the best of the best, when it comes to hands-on preparation and training for the workforce.” Lancaster-based Company “We take these NMT program graduates like that! Boom! Right off the top!”

Money, Money, Money! Recession-Proof Careers –All industries Degree levels and starting salaries: –Associates:$30,000 – $62,000/year –Bachelors:$40,000 – $65,000/year –Masters:$50,000 – $80,000/year –Doctorate:$80,000 – plus/year
