MLA-MOUG OCLC Search and Discovery Task Force

Why? FirstSearch end of life When? May 2015, wrapping up now Who? Chair: Michael Duffy (MLA) MLA: Tom Bickley, Laura Gayle Green, Stephen Henry, Carlos Peña MOUG: Rebecca Belford, Marty Jenkins, Hermine Vermeij, Brad Young

MLA-MOUG OCLC Search and Discovery Task Force Charge Working with the Music OCLC Users Group, investigate OCLC's WorldCat Discovery Services to determine if it will be sufficient to meet the needs of music users. If the Task Force determines that WorldCat Discovery Services is not sufficient, it will recommend a course of action to petition OCLC to continue to provide the FirstSearch interface for WorldCat after December 31, 2015. It will also recommend a course of action to petition OCLC for specific improvements to WorldCat Discovery Services to meet the needs of music users.

TF methodology 1.Background info 2.Compile initial observations 3.Systematic review 4. ║ : Specific recommendations drafted : ║ 5. ║ : Specific recommendations organized : ║ 6.Course of action

1. Background Webinars Ready, Set, GO… WorldCat Discovery Configuration… WorldCat Discovery Searching… Support documentation WCD catalogs Virginia Tech Default: WorldCat + WorldCat.org UC - Melvyl Default: 96 databases

2. Initial observations  “Searching universe”?  Why these results?  What does “music” mean?*  Author block problematic  Whither the analytic titles?  “Editions”: YMMV * Yes, we’re serious.

Review scope Results, facets, bibliographic records  Generic front-end  WorldCat content

3. Systematic review Music checklist Short summary by section OCLC documentation  “Searching WorldCat indexes”  “Item bibliographic data as displayed in the WorldCat Discovery interface”

Systematic review

WCD recommendations (working draft, Feb. 25, 2016) Three categories 1.Major/critical a.Provided in FirstSearch b.Not in FirstSearch 2.General 3.Enhancements All recommendations here: working draft

(1a) Major/Critical; in FirstSearch  Display subfields $b, $c, $d, $k and $q in name headings, to allow for identification and differentiation of names.  When fields 700, 710, or 711 contain subfield $t, display all title-related subfields … together with … all name-related subfields. working draft

# 27748033 2/21/116 WCD, UB  WCD, UC 

FirstSearch # 27748033 2/21/116

(1a) Major/Critical; in FirstSearch  Display all instances of the 028 field when present.  Display 245 subfields together; alternatively, identify 245 subfield $c as responsibility instead of names from 1xx/7xx… 245$c: Currently suppressed from display. We would prefer the former; FirstSearch employs the alternative working draft

;

(1b) Major/Critical; not in FirstSearch  When a 240 field is present, display 240 combined with a repeated display of the 1xx, and hyperlink the resulting string to search on the name-title heading.  For linked searches generated from displayed controlled names, search on all name subfields within the field as a single phrase to link to the correct entity. working draft

Portrait: Gilbert Stuart, John Adams, c. 1800/1815. National Gallery of Art. http://www.nga.gov/content/ngaweb/Collection/art-object-page.42933.html

https://virginiatech.on.worldcat.org/se arch?queryString=au:John%20Adams &databaseList=283,638

 When 7xx fields with subfield $t are present, display them as hyperlinks to searches on the name-title heading.  Change the facet option for “music” to “music recording.” (1b) Major/Critical; not in FirstSearch working draft

Music-related Format facet

(2) General [high priority]  When 7xx fields with subfield $t have second indicator blank, display with the label, “Related Works:”.  When 7xx fields with subfield $t have second indicator 2, display with the label, “Contains:”. working draft

(2) General [high priority]  Display all instances of the 546 field.  Display all instances of the 264 field and use second indicator to generate the appropriate label. working draft 546 currently suppressed from display. 264 #1 displays, only.

(2) General [high priority]  Utilize additional coded Material Types to generate additional icons and to return search when facet option is selected.  [Improve Boolean search functionality in Advanced Search] working draft

Format icons  FirstSearch WCD 

Advanced Search: complex Booleans  su:england OR "great britain" OR "united kingdom" AND kw:"brass band" AND kw:girl* OR wom* [3,050,436 Result] NOT: su: (england OR "great britain" OR "united kingdom") AND kw: "brass band" AND kw: (girl* OR wom*) [9 results]

(2) General [Format facet]  Add a facet option for “print music score” to differentiate from “downloadable music score.” [matches “Print book”]  Replace “musical” with “music” for format terms that use the term “musical.” working draft

(2) General [display]  Use ISBD punctuation in 505 fields to generate display…  Display 382 fields as recommended in [most recent] “WorldCat Discovery Display Preferences for Medium of Performance.” working draft

(2) General [indexes]  Include publisher name from 028 $b in publisher index.  Index musical flat and sharp sign characters.  Create a dedicated medium of performance index. working draft

(2) General [linking functionality] Hyperlink genre headings [as phrases] within the genre index. working draft

https://buffalo.on.worldcat.org/ search? queryString=su: Chamber %20music%20 https://buffalo.on.worldcat.org/oclc/896021106https://buffalo.on.worldcat.org/oclc/896021106 (Feb. 22, 2016) 600 650 655 WCD Genre

(3) Enhancements, or, The Incredible Shrinking Category X Too important: MoP index X Too futuristic: Responsive facets

(3) Enhancements  Create alternate display for “view online” button for non-print resources…  Create a browse index for publisher number (028 $a).  Include name headings from 7xx author fields in the author facet; complex relationships reflected in these fields require further analysis of which names are appropriate to include. working draft

6. Course of action (DRAFT) Draft recommendations/conclusions Recommend MLA and MOUG issue [specific recommendations] jointly and request ongoing communication with OCLC. WorldCat Discovery offers a far less satisfactory interface than FirstSearch for music users. Ask OCLC to continue providing access to the FirstSearch interface until OCLC provides the functionality currently present in FirstSearch that would make WorldCat Discovery usable for music. working draft

I ♥ 700$t “What can I do?” I ♥ MOUG

While we still have FirstSearch…
