Thermal Energy Mr. Ford -8 th Grade Science

Temperature The measurement of the speed of molecules. It’s an average. The more kinetic energy means higher temperature and vice versa. Scales-Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin

Thermal Energy The total amount of energy (potential and kinetic) of all the molecules in an object. Which has more thermal energy, a gallon really hot water or an iceberg? Why? Iceberg because it has more molecules.

Heat The transfer of thermal energy from one object to another when objects are at different temperatures. Thermal energy molecules are moving Heat always moves from object with highest temperature to object with lowest temperature. Ex: When you take a hot shower, you feel warmer because the heat from the water is transferring to your body because the water has a higher temperature than your body. Give me an example?

Types of Heat 3 Types of heat Radiation-heat transfer through empty space in the form of electromagnetic waves. Conduction- Heat transfer through the direct contact of objects. Convection- continuous cycle of hot air or liquid rising and cold air or liquid falling. Only takes place in liquids and gaseshttp://www.wisc- online.com/Objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=SCE30 4http://www.wisc- online.com/Objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=SCE30 4

The Connection Thermal energy- The total energy of the molecules Heat- The movement of the molecules Temperature- The measurement of the movement of the molecules
