3 Overview Humans are social beings What does it mean to be human? How much of being human is instinctual, and how much is taught / learned? How do we learn to function in society? What factors influence how we see ourselves?

4 We can only truly know the impact of socialization when we see what happens when it is not there. Human contact influences our physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. From birth, interaction with other humans teaches us how to communicate, behave, and make sense of the world around us.

5 Nature v. Nurture Nature – Physical, chemical, genetic You are born that way, have no control over it Determined before birth More psychology oriented Nurture - Social Learned through observation or intentional instruction Anything after birth More sociology oriented

Direct instruction, sanctions, rewards, punishments, approval At what age are they most influential? Family, then school, then peers, then media? How can they influence how we see ourselves?
