3 Thomas Hooker Puritan founder of Connecticut 1630’s Preacher
Why significant? He wrote the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut – 1st constitution in the colonies, wanted all men to vote not just rich, “ the foundation of authority is based on the free consent of the people”

4 John Locke English philosopher (thinker) in the late 1600’s
Why significant ? He challenged the right of kings to rule b/c people (not God!)give power to governments! There is a “social contract” between citizens and their government government is for, “ the natural preservation of lives, liberties, and property”

5 William Penn Penn founded Pennsylvania for the Quakers
Pennsylvania was a “Holy Experiment” All were equal in God’s eyes (Quaker Belief) He wrote Pennsylvania’s “Framework of government” ( constitution) Borrowed ideas from John Locke Government power should be limited

6 Baron Charles de Montesquieu
French political philosopher and thinker from the early 1700’s Key Enlightenment figure Wrote a book, “ The Spirit of the Laws” which urged separating the government into three branches (executive, legislative, and judicial) This should prevent tyranny (injustice) by kings

7 William Blackstone English lawyer from 1700’s
He wrote “Commentaries on the Laws of England” He based law on the Ten Commandments and said “God’s law is man’s law” Said man had individual and property rights Most lawyers studies his books ( Presidents Jefferson and Madison)
